The news came in Friday in heartbreaking fashion.

According to numerous reports, the 2-year old son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson had been in critical care before passing away. The boy, whose name was not released per the family's request, was believed to have suffered injuries consistent with abuse, and a man who police say was taking care of the child has been arrested.

Peterson, who had visited the family on Thursday, returned to team's facility Friday and issued a short statement.

    "I should start off by saying I really appreciate all the support that I've been receiving from fans, the Vikings organization," Peterson said. "This is a private matter and I would ask you all to please just respect my privacy and not ask at all about the situation at hand. Thanks."

Nelson Peterson, Peterson's father, confirmed to the St. Paul Pioneer Press that the child was Adrian Peterson's son.

At age 7 he saw his brother killed by a drunk driver. At age 28 he is saying goodbye to his 2 year old son.

Fucking sickening. My little boy just turned 3 a couple of weeks ago. How anyone could lay hands like that on a little guy I will never be able to fathom. What's really disturbing is this ain't the first time this POS has hurt a child. Yet there he was roaming free and now a little boy had his life end in a horrible violent fashion. Makes me fucking sick. I seriously hope his fellow inmates break the broom out on this motherfuckers ass and don't stop pushing till the fucking handle pops out of his mouth.
