The 2007 Mississippi coaching staff consisted of  Ellis Johnson (DC), J.B. Grimes (OL), Charlie Harbison (safeties), Melvin Smith (CB).

The good news is that this is the only year from 2001 to 2011 that MSU beat Auburn.

I LOVE the Defensive Coaching Staff (would've liked to have Rocker back, and it's still a possibility, but Rodney Garner is just as good of a DL Coach as Rocker and he's a better recruiter (bagman). This is the fourth ”Homerun Hire” on the Defensive side (DC Ellis Johnson, Safety Coach Charlie ”Cheese” Harbison, DL Coach Rodney Garner & CB Coach Melvin Smith).

Melvin Smith:
2009 MSU secondary led the SEC with 17 Ints.
2009 Freshman Corey Broomfield (Fr. All SEC)
2010 Top 10 SEC Recruiter
2011 Jr. Jonathan Banks (All SEC & Semi-finalist for the Thorpe Award)
2011 Frank Broyles Award Semifinalist
2012 Johnathan Banks (2012 Thorpe Award winner & Walter Camp All American)

SEC/Big 12 coaching resume:
Ole Miss - WR/TE Coach (1992-1994)
Miss State - WR Coach (1995)
Miss State - CB Coach (1996-2001)
uat - Safety Coach (2002)
Texas A&M - Safety Coach (2003-2005) *followed Franchione*
Miss State - CB Coach (2006-2012) *hired by first year coach Sylvester Croom and retained by Coach Mullen*

No coach is safe with Malzahn running things. He gets who he wants pretty much.

I suppose Gus is stringing a group of coaches together that are familiar with one another but I have no idea what to expect. I checked MSU's defensive stats for 2007 and they were mostly upper third due to their overall pass defense but the schedule plays into those stats so that's not very telling. 35th in scoring D giving up 331.8 YPG, 23.2 PPG, almost 27 per against SEC opponents while creating 28 turnovers which is probably the best stat but again they played some real cupcakes. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Can he make them look back for the ball while not getting beat? If he can MAKE them do that and wrap up when tackling the first year, then I'll be happy. Pfft. It's hard to believe the very basics of tackling and pass defense have been forgotten at the collegiate level. Hell, I saw it at a pro level Sunday. What the hell are coaches teaching these kids?

I'ma tell ya'.  I like what CGM is doing.  Ellis Johnson, Harbison, Garner and Smith running our defense.  Garner heading up our recruiting.  So far, we've signed the #1 JUCO running back and #1 JUCO guard (3 years eligibility left)  I'm starting to get the warm and fuzzies about AU football again.  And since it's a whole new staff, it's very doubtful that Jake Holland has any incriminating pics of any of the coaches, so they'll be evaluating him on talent...or lack thereof...alone.  Yesssssss....

I'm thinking the guys have already been hitting the weight room puttin' on some Russell Muscle.  (Lord knows, we don't have a bowl game to get in the way) Kris Frost and Bossanova McKinzey are licking their chops because they know they're finally gonna' get to show their stuff.  Blackson, Wright and Whitaker are squatting and bench pressing machines, ready to jack a mofo up at the line.  Chad Slade is looking at brochures for Tennessee Tech and Alcorn State.  I gotta' stop....

Oh...and by the by....the Alabama Sports Writers Association listed Jeremy Johnson 6'6" 219 as their first team All State QB.  Damn, about to jizz my pants.

I just hope Jake never corners you at the Supper Club one night. I'm afraid we may finally see some sign of aggression in him. He may actually tackle you and give you a painful noogie. Or something.

That 28 turnovers is a key stat imo. We all know that our D is gonna give up some scores due to the tempo. However, creating turnovers and getting extra possesions for our offense is gonna be huge.

I doubt as long as Gus is HC we ever seen a defensive battle again and I'm fine with that. With the style of ball we are gonna be playing, if we can get our defense to a 20 ppg average or less, we should kickass for the most part.

Holland is the king of the wedgie.  Based on his "tackling" style, it seems he is used to trying to grab underwear as you run past him.
