I don't think we're ever going to recover while on this proverbial track. Respectfully, but contrary, to THS's view I see this Balkanization of Amerika as bringing us one step closer to being a western Europe-style, social democracy at best...but that conclusion is probably me just whistling past the graveyard.
Don't want to speak for him, but I'm pretty sure he is not saying at all that the increased hostility is a good thing. He is saying that the diversification of opinion is a good thing. The next logical step from that is to coexist, compromise, and start to look at issues with an open mind and the understanding that the country as a whole is pretty moderate. Implementing truly extreme political policies won't fly in America. For every extreme liberal policy, there is an equal and opposite Republican reaction. And vice versa.
That is good for democracy. The bitterness, vitriol, and downright noncooperation? That is very, very bad. I'm pretty sure that that is what THS was saying.
