STARKVILLE — Auburn is a pain in Dan Mullen's side.

Mississippi State's fourth-year coach has defeated every school in the Southeastern Conference as either an assistant coach or head coach - except for Auburn. Uhhh...he hasn't beaten any SEC West team as a head coach except Ole Miss.

He's 0-5 against the Tigers, who he will try to beat Saturday for the first time when MSU opens SEC play against Auburn (11 a.m., ESPN) at Davis Wade Stadium. To say this one is personal is an understatement, even if coaches are prone to coachspeak - i.e., one game at a time, the next game is always the most important game, etc.

"This is so overdue and so needed," said Megan Mullen, Dan Mullen's wife of seven years. "There will not be anybody happier than me to see him get that, and I'm sure for him too. Everybody talks about the school up north (Ole Miss), but this one is equal or even above in my book."

The real pain began Sept. 27, 2007. Dan Mullen was ill, battling flu-like symptoms and declining medical attention. "Listen, I have practice this afternoon. I'll be all right. I just don't have time," he recalls telling people. He even filled in for friend and Florida coach Urban Meyer on his radio show that night.

The pain in his side continued the next morning, the eve of an important game. He could barely stand, Megan Mullen said. By 8:30 p.m., after a walkthrough with his quarterback Tim Tebow at Florida Field, he finally asked someone to take him to the hospital. It didn't take long for doctors to realize his appendix was close to rupturing and an emergency surgery was needed.

Mullen, at first, refused and asked if he they could reschedule for 11 p.m. on Saturday. After all, he had to coach in a big game against Auburn that next day.

He had no choice, however, and an emergency appendectomy was performed at 12:45 a.m. - on game day.

The coach, who was antsy and "running laps" in a hospital room that morning, convinced Florida's team doctor to check him out of the hospital at 2 p.m. - before doctors had cleared him for release. A small car accident on the way to the game made for some uncomfortable moments (Mullen refused to take medicine so he could call the game with a clear head), but they arrived - albeit a bit shaken by the fender-bender in a state trooper's car - in time for pregame meetings. He napped for an hour, and with iodine dripping through his bandages, the offensive coordinator called plays from the press box.

I wonder how much longer MSU will keep Mullen around. Maybe they don't care that he sucks as long as he beats Ole Miss.

Really?

Do you not think that Lord Sabenz could not take over that program and make them a powerhouse? Hell UAT would re-name themselves MSU east.

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America ' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.' That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.'

I'm pretty sure that you could find a coach that could win more than 3 division games over a 3 year span. It just depends on how much MSU wants to pay for one. Even in Croom's last two years he beat Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, and Ole Miss at least once. One of those last two years, MSU was tied for 3rd in the West. While I understand that the landscape of the West has changed since '07, the point still stands.

Sherrill won for a couple of years, as long as you didn't mind the following probation and animal cruelty charges.

You meet a man on the Oregon Trail. He tells you his name is Terry. You laugh and tell him: "That's a girl's name!" Terry shoots you. You have died of dissin' Terry.

I kind of agree.. but then again, I think surrounding states may be encroaching on the recruiting due to recruiting stronger (AL and AU are two examples). Plus, from a financial perspective.. they aren't putting as much into the program as their competitors. Croom was Crooming all over the west though during that period of time, so I think Mullen's going to be in trouble if they can't beat us (or if they lose.. get a major upset or two later down the line).

Also, the argument always was: Name a coach that could win at Vandy. Or South Carolina. Like I said, alot of it depends on how much money you want to spend.
