Mac Miller dead at 26.  Some of you may be very familiar with his work.  My knowledge of the guy was a couple of appearances on Ridiculousness.  Love that show.  He seemed cool, funny...great guest on the show.  I just saw where he died today at 26.  I decided to pull up some of his stuff.  I'm 58.  I don't know good rap, hippity hop from shit.  I just know what sounds/feels good to me.  A few of his tracks were pretty damn good.  But one thing I noticed was all his youtubez had 10's of millions of views.  "Donald Trump", some of the lyrics below, had almost 150 million.  He must have done something right.  Anyway, just thought I'd share.

Don't know if you caught "The Evolution of Hip Hop" on Netflix, but it was a great documentary that, for once, didn't lionize Sugarhill Gang as innovators.

Anywho...the series won a Peabody.  Congrats to my boy, Shad, who hosted the doc and shared in the award.

Season 2 of this series was recently released.  Amazing archival footage and interviews.  The Oakland episode was phenomenal.  For some reason I thought Digital Underground was an east coast project.

Saw Atmosphere at Vinyl Music Hall in P'cola tonight.  Got-DAMN what a show.

Nods to the newer material (Sean made a few jokes about the label getting pissed off if the crowd posted video of him doing old songs rather than the new stuff...he owns the label) but they went DEEEEEEEP into the old stuff.  Off the top of my head, we got:

It was a really great performance in a very small venue.  The pleasant surprise of the evening was the opener, Dem Atlas.  Strong raps over Ant (of Atmosphere) beats combined with a bit of soulful wailing and more than a little emphatic yelling.  He kind of looks and croons like Terrence Trent D'arby, but raps like a beast.  HIGHLY recommended.
