RWS is (intentionally) ignoring the obvious fact that with each additional team added to the playoffs it becomes exponentially more fair.

A 2 team playoff, where on any given year 2-3 teams have legitimate arguments that they belong in the game? Obviously not fair. A 16 team playoff, where roughly 2/3 (am I doing it right?) of teams ranked in the current system get a chance to play for it all, is infinitely more fair.

That ain't happening any time soon, but a +1 game is considerably more fair than what we have now, and so on and so on.

Something like this would have the minimum bitching. You have a hard line drawn, that it has to be a conference champion. Not something subjective like "we're taking the top 8 teams in the rankings". Only flaw to it might be you have the same two teams playing for a NCG two or three years in a row. MAYBE.

I think you can do that with the 6 BCS conference Champions, and then take the two highest rated non-BCS conference Champions, so we can stop hearing the bitching about how they don't ever get included, and have your 8 team playoff.  Notre Dame?  Go fuck yourself and join a conference.

Start the quarter finals the week of Christmas, the semis on New Years, and then the final the week after.  Since it takes place during Christmas break, you don't have the argument from the academia about it interfering with school.
