If you don't want to read basically the guys head got in the way of the particle beam while working on some equipment and he absorbed what was assumed to be 400X the lethal dose of ionizing radiation.  Eventually his skin peeled off, he went deaf in one ear, and has seizures.  But apparently the side of his face that was hit, while paralyzed, doesn't age.
