Scarbinsky: Saban is Dooley's mentor, but Chizik could be his role model
By Kevin Scarbinsky -- The Birmingham News
January 22, 2010, 5:30AM

Who will Derek Dooley be when he grows up? Gene Chizik or Nick Saban? (Birmingham News / Mark Almond)You, in the faded Peyton Manning jersey. Why the long face?

Oh, you’re a Tennessee football fan. I understand.

You’ve looked at the bottom line, and you think the bottom has dropped out.

You’ve seen Derek Dooley’s 17-20 career record as a head coach, and you see trouble ahead.

Look on the bright side, and don’t listen to Bill Parcells.

You are not necessarily what your record says you are.

Look at Gene Chizik.

In case you didn’t notice, he came to Knoxville last season and did something Nick Saban couldn’t do on his own home field.

Chizik embarrassed Lane Kiffin, although no one does that quite as well as Kiffin himself.

Saban may be Dooley’s mentor, but Chizik could be his role model. No SEC head coach in recent years has been greeted with as much disdain as the Auburn coach.

Chizik didn’t get a honeymoon.

Thanks to his bottom line, he just got mooned.

His 5-19 career record in two years at Iowa State eclipsed his longer and stronger track record as a defensive coordinator at Auburn and Texas. He didn’t win at Iowa State, but that didn’t mean he forgot how.

Look at him now.

He became the first Auburn coach to take the Tigers to a bowl game in his first season. His first full-year recruiting class has a chance to be the No. 1 class in Auburn history.

He still has to prove he can win championships, starting with the state title, but AD Jay Jacobs no longer deplanes at the local airport to a chorus of boos.

Like Jacobs, Tennessee AD Mike Hamilton has discovered twice in the last two years that it’s easier to covet a big-name coach than to corral one.

SEC jobs should be among the most prized in college football, but the latest trend in SEC coaching searches has been to aim high and then get real.

Four SEC schools have hired five new head football coaches in the last two years. Three of them — Chizik, Kiffin and Dooley — brought losing records to their new posts.

The other two — Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen and Kentucky’s recently promoted Joker Phillips — were career assistants with a blank slate as a boss.

Auburn and Tennessee are two of the better jobs in the league, while State and Kentucky are not, but the disparity in history and tradition didn’t make much of a difference.

None of those four programs was able to land a big fish like Saban.

Alabama did, but not just because it was Alabama. The Tide found itself in the right place at the right time. It needed a new coach at the same time that Saban needed a new direction.

Remember, Alabama is also the school that followed Bear Bryant with three straight coaches with career losing records in Ray Perkins, Bill Curry and Gene Stallings.

Perkins won 10 games one season. Curry won a share of the SEC title. Stallings won an outright conference championship and added a national crown.

So there’s more than one way to find a championship coach.

You can go get one, or you can help grow one.

In just 14 months at Auburn, Chizik has displayed massive potential for growth. Dooley, given his personal and professional bloodlines, would seem to have plenty of upside himself.

No matter how his tenure turns out, Tennessee should consider itself fortunate following its latest turnover.

The Vols still don’t have a proven winner as a head coach.

But at least they have a bona fide grown-up.

I was just talking about this with a buddy of mine earlier. Tennessee will be better off three years from now with Dooley instead of Kiffin.

Doesn't bother me.  Scarbinsky is trying to sell papers and incite debate.  I get that.  Hell, I DO that around here, except for the paper selling part.

I got no issue with anything that's posted from another source.  Now if you'd posted this and claimed you got it all in a text message from somebody who cuts grass in Tallassee, which is just miles from Auburn, then yeah I'd have to ridicule you.

Oh, and FWIW, the only reason Jacobs doesn't deplane to boos is that I don't have time to be at the airport to greet his every landing.

I think you'll find that I've never done that, or anything remotely comparable to that, so we're cool.

While technically true, the only reason Terry B didn't play in a bowl game was the probation and not a failure of coaching.
