How Quickly Things Have Changed
« on: February 07, 2024, 09:58:16 AM »
Remember the good ole days, when we railed over the fleet of Dodge Chargers parading around The Crapstoned?  Well, with the NIL cash flowing through college spurtz now, it ain't nuthin' but a thang.

FUGA QB, Carson Beck, just purchased himself a shiny new, Lamborghini Urus Performante for $270K.  Just what every college student needs to cruise around campus.

My doctor told me I needed to stop masturbating.  I asked him why, and he said, "because I'm trying to examine you."

Get paid, young man.

But, depreciable assets are a dumb fucking purchase with your first big check.

Agreed.  I'd buy a shit ton of land instead.  The deer, hogs, turkey, dove, and rabbits aren't going to hunt themselves.

Beck is not a handsome man.  The Lamborghini will serve as a fine pussy wagon.

I'm more curious about the fallout of Dartmouth's Men's Basketball team being allowed to unionize, and are now "employees."

I have so many questions.

Will any scholarships that they receive (not Athletic, since Ivy League doesn't do that, but academic) count as income?

Assuming that any gear/shoes/etc they get as part of on the team also counts as taxable income?

Will they have to file taxes in every state they play in?

Will all student-athletes, regardless of sport, now be employees?  Since most sports operate at a netloss, will that mean Dartmouth end these sports, similar to how they would close a department not meeting expectations?

Likely, yes.  There may be a credit/deduction also given, but it will meet the IRS definition of income.

Assuming that any gear/shoes/etc they get as part of on the team also counts as taxable income?
Maybe.  Or they will have to pay for their uniforms and take a deduction.

Will they have to file taxes in every state they play in?
Depends on whether they meet the jurisdictional minimum of income.  Probably not for the run of the mill, non-Lambo buying guys.

Will all student-athletes, regardless of sport, now be employees?
TBD...don't think this case can blow that all the way open, but it will be something that people (win or lose) will lean on in their negotiations.

Since most sports operate at a netloss, will that mean Dartmouth end these sports, similar to how they would close a department not meeting expectations?
Do you even net operating loss carryover, bro?

This is going to get very messy, because whereas collegiate athlete jurisprudence is relatively new, labor law ain't.

No, and I doubt he bought the car.  It's likely a lease.

Or his entire support network is full of dipshits.

Don’t forget that as employees, they are entitled to workers comp benefits, which means that every injury, no matter how slight, suffered in the line and scope of employment, is compensable.  In Alabama, there’s a lifetime medical benefit.  Open up that can of worms.

Thanks for the answers, Wes.

Insurance was one benefit I thought of, that now those players would get the same benefit as the coach with regards to injuries or sickness.  I hadn't thought about the workers comp aspect of it, though.  Mainly if a player blows out their ACL, it's no longer the parents insurance, but the school's.

Which incentivizes a safer work environment.

Here comes flag football.

That is one reason the NCAA avoided this for all of these years.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Sure beats the hell out of that little red car Bo Jackson drove around campus.
I think it was like a Mitsubishi Starion or something like that.
