TAMPA, Florida -- Auburn receiver D'haquille Williams says he's learned from the mistake that led to his Outback Bowl suspension in an interview with Auburn's in-house website, AuburnTigers.com.
Williams, who declined to go into details about the violation of team rules that led to his suspension, took responsibility for the mistake that led to his absence.
He has been working on Auburn's scout team in bowl practices after arriving late to Tampa on Saturday.
"I let my teammates down and I'm sorry for that," Williams told the website. "I let the Auburn family down, too, and I'm sorry for that. I made a mistake, so I have to learn by that. As the days go by, and the game gets closer, I think about that because I could be out there playing with my brothers."
Malzahn declined to go into any details surrounding Williams' suspension during Monday's Outback Bowl press conference.
Mystery had surrounded Williams' absence up until Malzahn's announcement of the wide receiver's suspension, particularly after he posted a picture of himself on Instagram with an injured eye.
Williams, who missed eight days of bowl practices before returning to the practice field, met with Malzahn after the undisclosed incident.
"He just let me know how it is," Williams told the website. "'There are consequences,' he said. I said, 'I'm willing to accept whatever you have for me, Coach.' He gave me a chance, and I respect him for that. I learned from this mistake."
Williams, who leads Auburn with 45 catches for 730 yards and five touchdowns this season, flirted with the idea of entering the NFL Draft early, but he has decided to return for his senior season, presumably to play in an offense expected to be more pass-heavy.
"I'm 100 percent coming back," Williams told the website. "I feel like we have some unfinished business."
