For a sports fan in Alabama, walking through the lobby and the rotunda and checking out the newest display cases is like an 8-year-old visiting Toys ‘r Us.Did you know Bill Oliver played baseball at Alabama after he finished his football eligibility there? He told me Friday morning on the Smashmouth Radio Network on ESPN 973 that he played centerfield, batted third in the lineup and hit .340.You can see his old baseball glove, held together with shoestrings, and his baseball spikes.Over there is an old pair of custom shoulder pads from Eric Davis, the great cornerback from Jacksonville State, the San Francisco 49ers and the Carolina Panthers.Over here is the gold medal Alabama A&M’s Dannette Young Stone won as a member of the U.S. 4 x 100-meter relay team at the 1988 Olympics. And on and on it goes. The items that promise to draw the attention of the most visitors are those donated by Nick Saban. They include the straw hat he wore at practice during the 2009 season, a box of Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies and the game plan from the 2009 Florida International game. That game plan is an impressive document, a three-ring binder that must be 5 inches thick. The book’s open to two play diagrams.Base Bench Chop.N Base Closed Billy FZ.Do you understand what that means? Me neither.Scott Myers, the ASHOF’s executive director, said Saban has a complete library of those game-plan binders in his office in the Mal Moore Athletic Building. It’s a little glimpse into Saban’s famous “Process,†but it’s only a glimpse. Fans and opposing coaches can’t thumb through it. The binder is behind the glass. There’s one more Saban item that stands out. It’s a sheet of handwritten notes from one of his pregame speeches, and it contains some of his familiar phrases, such as “Do what we do†and “Start fast, finish strong.â€There’s one more phrase on there that stands out in light of recent events.“6 Seconds of Hell.â€
“6 Seconds of Hell.â€
Is that what he gives Terry every night?
