Coach claims booster paid recruit

A football coach in Nashville says he witnessed a booster give Mississippi State freshman defensive back Will Redmond money, according to a radio interview.

Byron De'Vinner, who has been interviewed by NCAA investigators, told the Head to Head radio show in Mississippi on Tuesday that he saw a "handshake" between the booster and Redmond, and that former Bulldogs receivers coach Angelo Mirando was aware of benefits.

De'Vinner confirmed to ESPN's Joe Schad on Tuesday afternoon that he called into the radio show. He said the handshake between Redmond and the booster included about "$200."

"Will Redmond is a kid that was basically taken advantage of by a booster and by an assistant coach," De'Vinner said on the radio show.

Mirando resigned Aug. 19, citing "unforeseen personal issues."

"I've read what's been written but I have nothing to say about that," Mirando told Schad.

Mississippi State has been working with the NCAA to examine a "potential recruiting irregularity" over the past several months, but has declined to provide further details since Mirando resigned.

According to documents provided to the Clarion-Ledger on Aug. 28, an MSU booster was found to have had "impermissible contact" with a recruit and may have engaged in other NCAA rules violations. The school has since disassociated with the booster.

De'Vinner: Mississippi State booster provided benefits to multiple players DE Denico Autry among  them, Nashville area coach tells ESPN

De'Vinner told Joe Schad of ESPN that Mississippi State booster Robert Denton Herring provided benefits to "five or six" MSU athletes, including junior defensive lineman Denico Autry.

Mississippi State hopes 2-for-1 deal pays dividends

(Herring) told me he provided the benefits," De'Vinner told ESPN. "He told me he helped get Denico there. Robert Denton Herring loves State. And he was going to do whatever he could to help State."

De'Vinner also told ESPN that Herring was eager to convince Frank Harron and Brandon Hill, two recruits who signed with other SEC programs, to commit to Mississippi State.

De'Vinner told The Clarion-Ledger that Herring tried to recruit "at least 10" players to Starkville.

Autry, who transferred from East Mississippi Community College, has impressed in his first two games with the Bulldogs (2-0). His five tackles and a sack have helped replace the lost production from Fletcher Cox leaving for the NFL. He chose MSU over scholarship offers from eight other SEC schools.

Before De'Vinner brought up Autry, his story primarily focused on freshman defensive back Will Redmond receiving a "$150-200 handshake" and jacket from Herring. Redmond has not played for the Bulldogs, though De'Vinner told 97.3 The Zone in Alabama on Thursday that it was "going to get cleared up."

MSU officials haven't publicly commented on De'Vinner's allegations but did release a statement on Aug. 23 that said the school and NCAA were looking into a "potential recruiting irregularity" and that more details would be released when the investigation is complete.

The school also has disassociated its relationship with a booster, according to documents obtained by The Clarion-Ledger on Aug. 28. The booster's name was redacted from the documents.

Additionally, Angelo Mirando resigned unexpectedly on Aug. 19 as wide receivers coach, citing "unforeseen personal issues."

Mirando helped recruit Redmond out of Memphis East High School. And De'Vinner has said Mirando introduced Herring to Redmond and knew that Herring had provided improper benefits to the prospect.

Attempts to reach Herring, who lives in the Atlanta area, have been unsuccessful.

Mirando has not responded to numerous interview requests from The Clarion-Ledger but did talk with ESPN, saying: "I've read what's been written, but I have nothing to say about that."

The newest allegations provide the latest twist in a story that seems to evolve daily as De'Vinner speaks to various media outlets.

What started as a "$150-200 handshake" has grown to involve multiple players and as much as $60,000 offered to Redmond from another school that De'Vinner won't name.

There are some doubters to the veracity of De'Vinner's allegations based on his past.

He alleged in 2009 that Riverdale High School in Tennessee was improperly recruiting players, only for the Tennessee Secondary School Athletics Association to find no instance of wrong doing.

De'Vinner told The Clarion-Ledger Thursday his allegations will be verified soon when he releases audio tape recordings.

Karma is a bigger bitch than I am...

EVEN IF it isn't true - and I will only believe it when the NCAA releases a statement containing penalties - just seeing them get a dose of what we went through warms my heart.

Of course, because none of these players is a fraction of the stud Cam was, this story will never grow national legs.

As Wench was referring to about this story never getting legs in the national media, remember how at this point in the Cam story, his face and "Auburn scandal" was scrolling 24/7 on ESPN?
