I think most everyone remembers, but the hilarious irony is that Tuberville was eviscerated for giving Dax a scholarship, prompting Snaggle's defense/love.

It's an important position.  The NFL pays guys to do nothing but long snap.  But, when you're team is in need of other much more valuable positions, you don't waste a scholarship on a LS.   Should you never give one to a LS?  Not saying that.  You can train a kid to long snap.  I think most LS coming out of HS know they're going to be invited walk on's anyway.  If you can get one that way, why waste a scholarship?
