Well then, there's no reason for me to watch the rest of the race.   :civic:

Like Juan Pondworm Montoya into a jet drying truck.

Okay, I'll bite.

Heard some discussion this morning on the race and how Nascar really needed this thing to get them off to a good start.  They didn't.  Rain delays, wrecks, the big one on the first lap...finishing after midnight...not what you need to market your sport.  Don't know how true it is but I keep hearing how it's dropping in popularity.  I actually thought last year was a step in the right direction with Tony Stupid winning the Sprint Cup.  Jimmy Johnson had won it what...5-6 years in a row...and no one would know him if he walked through the door.  Stewart has always been a polarizing figure in Nascar and I think they need names like him and Junior and Gordon to get back on top.  Develop real rivalries and have drivers winning that everyone has either a love or hate relationship with.

I'm not a neckcar fan, but like the Super Bowl, I watch the "event" that is Daytona.  Couldn't give less of a shit who wins.  Well, this daytona, and I'm parroting the words used by so many to describe last nite, was simply bizarre.   I hear Neckcar is hurting, with crowds and viewership having really fallen off the last few years.   I don't know the numbers, just heard that.  And yeah, last night, if it was your first time to watch a neckcar race, you probably would never watch it again.   Neckcar made changes to the cars which made running in pairs unavailable like they used to, and was supposed to cause more "group racing."  It took the rear spoiler down, which made the cars more squirrelly.  I have heard the drivers hate the super speedway races, because even finishing one is largely more about luck than skill, as many drivers are taken out of the race in huge wrecks through no fault of their own.  This also causes huge delays in racing, which makes it no fun to watch.  I also noticed a concerted effort to talk about Danica Patrick as much as possible last night, and suspect she's going to be the face of neckcar in an effort to regain some viewship from a new or different demographic.  Good luck with that.  I don't hate her like some do, I guess because I don't give a shit about racing.  Driving a neckcar is 10x harder than an Indy car, and she couldn't win there.  Neckcar is a whole different ball game though, and, the old face of neckcar was  Dale Jr. who hasn't won shit in recent memory, yet was the sport's posterchild and king marketing figure.  So, you don't have to win in neckcar to make money.  Again, that shit last night was teh suxxors.

Yeah, I thought about going back and changing it after I read my own take.  He may do something this year but up until now, he's about the most overrated driver in the history of the sport.

The hell you say.

Ladies and Gentlemen, that is a new track record. As it stands now, Jean Girard is sitting on the pole, which is a statement of fact, and is in no way a comment on the driver's sexual orientation.

Well if it isn't Bill Nye the science guy. Or not....

Not liking it is one thing. Saying it to pass as fact is another. You are both wrong.

ath·lete noun \ˈath-ˌlēt, ÷ˈa-thə-ˌlēt\: a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina . The word athletics also comes from the Greek work Athlos meaning contest or to compete.

sport: An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.

Do you really think that sitting in an 800 hp piece of metal on a 120F degree piece of asphalt, driving it with no power steering for 4 hours at uber high speeds requires no skill or physical exertion?

Now cheerleading - is not a sport. There are no rules to it. There is no competition in its primary form. Cheerleading contests are secondary. It is a recreational activity first and foremost.

I agree with every fact and sentiment with the exception of pronunciation.  Athlete has 3 syllabuses.

This argument, correct though it is, doesn't fly with those that believe the only sports are Football, Basketball, and Baseball, and that athletes are only involved in those sports.  Everything else, to them, is an "activity".

Even though running was the first "activity" deemed a "sport" in achient Greece with the trek from Marathon to Athens by a military messenger to declare victory. The Big 3 are all fairly new, and American in the grand scheme. Hell, Golf goes back to the 15th Century Scotland, and archery even before that.
