Mike Dyer: SEC Offensive Player of the Week

Am I the only one that gets frustrated with Dyer's running technique this season? It seems he is Ben Tate circa his junior year. Always looking to bounce one out. Dancing around like a bear.

Now don't get me wrong, I love the end result. It just seems that if he ran with a little more reckless abandon rather than stopping at the line and looking for the hole, he might just get more out of the plays he gets nothing out of. The kid can run, but it seems he ran just a little more deliberate last season.

Then again, he probably has a lot less confidence in this line. With his power, I would like to see a few safeties pay for stepping up.

But hey, I'll take a buck seventy five any day.

See I got no real complaints with him.  McCaleb on the other hand absolutely makes me want to beat and elderly person.  If you have not found a crease on the outside before you get to the sidelines it's time to turn it up and get a yard or two.

Does no one notice how much more determined Mason seems to run. Kid just turns it loose. He reminds me of Dyer last season.

He does seem to have a FU attitude when he gets the ball.  Actually reminded me of McCaleb his freshman year when everyone was saying he was too small to play.

Before OM got hurt. He was a determined little shit then. And then the coaches told him to avoid the hits by running out of bounds. It stuck, dangit.

Mason took one handoff and turned it up quick.  Had 8-9 yards before he was hit.  Where was he on kickoff returns?  I thought he was back.

And yet, somehow manages 5.3 yards per carry, and 10.6 yards per catch, AND bonus, he's available to play because his 170lb body isn't battered and bruised.

I think for a while he was trying to make something extra happen.  Dyer...HE needs to lower his head and get the yards he can.

I don't see a whole lot of difference other than Dyer having to do more himself this year.  As has been said, you can't overemphasize the affect of running behind a senior dominated line and playing in the same backfield as the best player in college football.  I was really worried going into this year, that we'd realize Dyer was a product of those things and far less of the back that he showed last year.  Not the case.  His running style is different but the bottom line is, if they feed him the rock, he finds a way to produce.  And although I've never been there, done that...I imagine the more he gets rolling in a game, the more fired up the line gets and the harder they try and block for him.

I know. You look up and he has several big plays. The ones that drive me nuts are the ones where he needs one more foot for a first down and he turns sideways. ARGGHH.

I see Mason as a hybrid between the two. He may end up having some huge numbers. He fits this offense well.

With the extra backs coming in next season I was hoping to see Mason used more like Sammie Watkins.
Might be a better option than Dyer or OMac when Frazier takes his turn.

When Tate came back his Sr year doing just this, he got just as many big plays, but he also go the extra few yards it took to get the first down. Big plays are great, but if you dance on 3rd and 2 and don't get the first, I sometimes feel like that hurts the team more than the big plays help the team. I know that sounds crazy, but a sustained drive that scores affects a defense a lot more than a big play that does not end in a score.
