Tuberville thoughts
« on: August 02, 2011, 10:35:30 AM »
I've been reading off and on the What It Means To Be A Tiger book.

Came across Tuberville's section.  May have already been discussed, but I found several things he wrote to be interesting.

> Convinced AU was far better than Oklahoma and would have been able to beat USC in 2004.

> Recognizes that there is a definite bias in the state media against Auburn. Pointed out two writers in particular.

> Blames himself for screwing up 2008.  The idea was right, the execution was wrong.

> Says that he was afraid that if he stayed the program would have hit rock bottom.  It needed a change and he was willing to make the sacrifice (yes, I know, a $5 mil sacrifice) to get out of the way.

> Says that even though he left, he believed he could pull it back together and regrets that he's not Auburn's coach today.

> Referenced a "select group" that wanted to run the program and says he refused to let them.  No respect for this "select group" which he never names.

At least he recognizes where it went wrong.  He might could have gotten back on track, but he'd have had to fire everybody, and hire a new YOUNG go getter staff, AND let them coach.

That last thought seems to be a bit of an excuse.

I agree with all of his points.

Auburn would have easily competed with USC in 2004.  They were practically the same teams.

Who were the two writers he named?

I'll have to look tonight.  Don't carry the book with me and can't remember.

Whoever voted in the polls, though.  He bashed them for ranking AU third.  Said it was ridiculous.
