Matt Hayes Questions the Validity of Sheridan's Claims

Matt Hayes Questions the Validity of Sheridan's Claims

Quote
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – They can’t enjoy it. They can’t, even for a day, celebrate their national championship without yet another question raised or another rumor floated.

Illinois coach Ron Zook once famously called this “noise in the system,” the constant chatter – real or not -- drowning out the message.

The noise meter for the Auburn Tigers, everyone, is off the charts. Whether we’re hearing truth or fiction, one thing is certain: It’s deafening for coach Gene Chizik and his team.

That national championship moment six months ago now seems like six years ago.

“I don’t operate on rumors or innuendo or anything of that nature,” Chizik said after he stepped to the podium at SEC Media Days. “I don’t have the energy and time to worry about what other people do.”

Nor can he control it. He tried in June at the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Fla., when, in front of his coaching colleagues, he asked an NCAA enforcement representative about the governing body’s investigation of his program. Julie Roe Lach, the NCAA’s vice president of enforcement, responded, “You’ll know when we’re finished – and we’re not finished.”

So wouldn’t you know it, once that anecdote was made public, USA Today sports analyst Danny Sheridan went on the nationally-syndicated Paul Finebaum Radio Network and declared that his sources -- who happen to have sources in the NCAA -- have indicated that the NCAA is close to identifying a “bag man” at Auburn who paid former Tigers star Cam Newton.

When I tracked down Sheridan Thursday at SEC Media Days, he said he shouldn’t have said the words “bag man” and went on to explain the confidence he has in his “sources” and how often they’ve been right.

“In the last 20-30 years, I think I’ve been right on 45 of 46 NCAA-related stories,” says the guy who gives betting odds for USA Today. “About $20-30,000 went to a church for repairs, and another $150,000-175,000 went to the Newtons.”

So let me get this straight. A person (or persons) Sheridan knows, knows a person (or persons) in the NCAA who told him what we knew all along: Something ain’t right in the land of Newton.

This, of course, led to the obvious question: What are the odds of this Sheridan information panning out?

“I’d say 50-50,” Sheridan said matter-of-factly.

Ladies and gentlemen, I could ask the fried catfish on my dinner plate last night for odds, and it would say, “50-50.” It is also here where we explain, with full disclosure, that Sheridan is an Alabama graduate.

Starting to get the picture?

Look, Danny Sheridan is a guy you’d like to have a beer with because of the people he knows and the stories he could tell from 46 years as an oddsmaker. I’m not exactly sure he’s the guy to break a story that would strip Auburn of its national championship, Newton of his Heisman Trophy and add another layer of filth to this college football offseason.

But it sure makes for another weird twist to the carnival that is Alabama vs. Auburn in the state of Alabama.

Without fully wading into the rivalry cesspool, let’s just say the Barners (Auburn) think the Bammers (Alabama) are behind this latest release from Sheridan. They’re jealous of Auburn’s success, still don’t think the Tigers are legitimate national champions and will never recognize the title.

In short, it’s business as usual in the state of Alabama. Big brother is keeping little brother down. Only now, he’s got the NCAA and a well-known sports analyst in his corner.

And there sits Auburn, defending the indefensible and trying to move on from a magical season to uncertainty this fall. No one in the nation has fewer returning starters (seven), the Tigers have no idea who will play quarterback (it could be freshman Kiehl Frazier), and everyone in the loaded SEC West wants payback.

“We’ve got one goal in mind: Keep pressing ahead,” Chizik said. “All that stuff unfolds favorably for us as we move forward.”

What are the odds of that?

What the fuck he's been right 45 of 46 times.

He never SAYS anything.  Like with OSU.

"They may be looking at a TV ban, but if not they could get some harsh penalties.  Some other things could possibly come out.  Or they might not."

No matter what happens, this idiot says "hey, I nailed it!"

What I think is interesting is I bet if none of the Chizik/NCAA conversation had leaked out, there wouldn't be all of these people popping up with "sources". It's always easy to out the people that are bullshitting. They're always the ones that either don't say anything or don't have "insight" until something comes out in the news. They don't have any specifics or anything months ago. But now that it has made it to the public that something was said? Oh, now they know all kinds of information.

This is the same douchebag Matt Hayes that went on Finebaum yesterday and said: "I GUARANTEE Cecil asked someone at Auburn for money, I GUARANTEE it, and if you don't believe it, you're naive."  Went on to defend his "guarantee", for which there's not a shred of evidence, with the very strong inference that since Cecil admits shopping him to MSU, "you know" he asked everybody recruiting Cam for money.   This, despite the fact that what little evidence that has actually been made public, has Kenny Rogers doing all the asking.

Any assessment, critique, debunking, or questioning by this douche of what anybody else says amounts to jack shit.
