Auburn's BCS national title in football in the fall and a sixth-place finish in swimming in the winter have helped the Tigers' men's athletic program take over the No. 1 spot in the Capital One Cup national standings, a survey that measures the on-the-field success of athletic programs.
Auburn has 70 points after the winter standings were calculated. That's 10 more than Connecticut and Eastern Washington, who are tied for second. Stanford, which usually wins the combined men and women's title, is fourth in the men's division with 55 points. The Cardinal leads the women's standings.
The spring standings will be factored in at the end of the academic year before determining the Capital One Cup winner.
Auburn is 32nd in the women standings.
