Hazing

I have nothing against a little hazing.  We did what I thought was mean shit to freshmen.  Such as whipping the back of their legs with coat hangers, or walking up behind them with a hand full of icy hot and rubbing it on their head and then having to practice like that, but choking someone out?

Discuss.

Kruppenbacher on alleged hazing: 'It was criminal'
The former attorney for the Orange County school board demands accountability in alleged hazing attack at Dr. Phillips High.

The fallout from the alleged hazing incident at Dr. Phillips High could ensnare the school's football players, coaches and district officials in a lawsuit.

Attorney Frank Kruppenbacher said at a news conference Monday that while the main concern is Darrion Denson's emotional and physical recovery, someone needs to be held accountable for the alleged attack on the 15-year-old boy.

Kruppenbacher, the former chief legal counsel for the Orange County school district, now works for the Morgan & Morgan law firm and represents the Denson family.

"This matter will be looked at down the road from the standpoint of accountability, both as to the individuals involved and the members of the staff and or the district," Kruppenbacher said. "It was criminal. He did not consent to be put unconscious. He did not consent to be given a concussion. He did not consent to being hit with chairs and fists."

Darrion told investigators that an assistant coach on Sept. 7 asked him to retrieve a pair of pants from the varsity football locker room. The teen said several football players beat him in the locker room, threw chairs at him and choked him unconscious.

When the boy regained consciousness, he found himself stuffed inside a garbage can in the locker room, police reports show.

The alleged attack sent him to Arnold Palmer Hospital, where doctors fitted him with a neck brace.

Officials with the Orlando Police Department and Orange County Public Schools continue their investigations into the alleged hazing incident. No arrests have been made.

Kruppenbacher said he submitted the names of five football players to the Police Department that Darrion claims attacked him. Kruppenbacher did not reveal those names to the media.

"No discipline of any sort has been handed out yet," OCPS spokeswoman Kathy Marsh said.

During the news conference, Darrion sat gazing at the floor.

Mother Rena Denson occasionally wiped tears from his face while shedding a few tears of her own.

Neither she nor Darrion spoke.

Kruppenbacher also said he is upset with the way officials at OCPS have handled the case.

"When a student is taken to a hospital somebody from the school district or school should be there to talk with the parents," he said. "[Darrion's parents] were left alone."

Darrion's father said his son will attend a new school Wednesday because he is frightened to return to Dr. Phillips High. The name of the school was not disclosed.

"He is very upset…He used to pass by [the football field], even when the school was closed, dreaming of playing on that field. Unfortunately, that day won't come," his father Rev. Porter Denson said.

School board member Vicky Bell, whose district includes Dr. Phillips High School, joined Kruppenbacher and the Denson family at the news conference. Bell said she is concerned that a culture of "win at all costs" in high school sports could have led to the incident.

"If the reports are accurate, these boys apparently, as a varsity team, considered it acceptable to beat a freshman that dared come into their hallowed domain," Bell wrote in an e-mail to the Orlando Sentinel. "We need to take pro-active action to rectify this situation, disciplining those who participated, and change this harmful attitude of sport's elitism."

Leslie Postal of the Sentinel staff contributed to this report. Walter Pacheco can be reached at wpacheco@orlandosentinel.com or 407-420-6262.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

No kidding.  You remember a few years ago when some of  the Alabama defensive players all jumped on that freshman and kick his ass in the spring drills?  I think the guy transferred to Memphis.
