Alright one of you masters of teh innerwebs, somehow late yesterday afternoon I had some "anti-virus" program pop up on my computer claiming that i have a spyware threat that has shut down my computer.  How the hell do I get this off my computer?

That happened to me as well off of an on-line shopping site.  Shut down, reboot, and when the re-boot first starts, get it to run in safe mode.  It may take a few tries to get it to do this.  If you can get to your program manager (as in "Cntrl-Alt-Del"), then you can delete the program that is causing the pop-ups from the open programs menu.  That won't remove it, but it will stop it from running momentarily.

Then download Malwarebytes Anti-Virus program. 

http://www.malwarebytes.org/  The free version works great.

Run that and it will clean all that shit out of your registry.  A Trojan is actually loaded into your computer - you have to scrub it all out.

MWB is legit...and it works like a charm.

Also, when you rid of this, get Kapersky or Trend Micro AV on your PC. Nothing will get by them. Nothing.

VERY frustrating experience.  The Trojan actually blocks you from downloading Malware bytes, so you have to get to program manager first and delete it before you can download MWB.  I was pissed - was ready to fly to Ukraine or Russia or wherever the hell and fuck somebody up.

I remember this little virus. It was called "THS" or something like that. If you click anywhere but right in the middle of the "X" close button, the virus downloads. MWB does work very well.

I guess i should have stated one of my biggest problems here.  The thing won't let me open my internet browser (not even in safe mode) so I can't download Malwarebytes.  I am actually on the wifes mac trying to resolve this.  If I can find another PC is it possible to download malwarebytes to a disc and run it that way?

Like I said, you have to try several times to be able to get to program manager... start hitting the tab key (I think that's the one?) the minute the computer starts trying to boot up.

But yes, I am pretty sure you can download to a flashdrive as well.

Try this:

In Internet Explorer go to Tools->Internet Options, click on the Connections tab. Press the “LAN settings” button. Now what you should do is uncheck the “Use a proxy server for your LAN”. Click ok and close this window. Now you should be able to browse to other sites using Internet Explorer.

•Press control + alt + delete to bring up your Task Manager.

OR:  Click Run, then type "taskmgr" and hit enter.

•Click on the "Processes" tab.

•3 Search for anything that says "AV09.exe" or something similar and right click on it.

•4Select "Open File Location" from the drop-down menu. Delete the file that opens when you do this. Then, while "AV09.exe" is still highlighted, click "End Processes."

Then try and download Malware and run it.

Throw your computer away and go back to stone tablets.

Before I got a GOOD AV software on my PC, I got this same virus. It disabled Task Manager, it disabled any site with AV software. It was a bugger indeed. I wound up saving myself a bunch of time and reloading the OS. Backup all your music, pics, etc first though.

Mark if you are using windows XP or later upon startup hit F8 to go the options screen, then select Restore computer from and earlier point.  System Restore back to before you got the virus...and technically it is not a virus it is hard core spyware.

You can also hit F8 (keep hitting) right after you start up. At the DOS screen, run in Safe Mode. Then basically do what TW told ya.
