As seen at ESPN.com ...

Hey everyone. I'm in Kentucky this week for an allegedly relaxing week off before we start getting cranked up for Media Days, though some really sweet World Cup action will fray my nerves.

I hope you know about my little World Cup venture: Gannett World Cup.

So why am I writing this post? Oh, yes. "News."

Chris Low, a righteous dude who blogs for ESPN.com, today posted a list indicating how many national titles (in all sports) owned by each of the Southeastern Conference men's programs.

His source is the SEC office.

Within that countdown, I came across this:

    Auburn: 9
    * Eight in swimming (1997, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009), one in football (1957).

    Alabama: 8
    * Eight in football (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009).

Thoughts:

a.) Wow.

b.) Finally -- someone recognizes the correct number of titles at Alabama.

Even at that '73 and '78 are still dubious by any standards.

Even though it’s not strictly football, I’ve had several questions about which SEC school owns the most national championships in men’s sports following South Carolina’s win at the College World Series on Tuesday.

Thanks to the SEC office, we have the answer.

Please keep in mind that the national championships listed are those recognized by the SEC and only includes those titles won by schools as SEC institutions.

Anyway, here you go:

Arkansas: 30

    * 11 in outdoor track (1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005), 11 in indoor track (1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006), seven in cross country (1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000), one in basketball (1994).

LSU: 20

    * Six in baseball (1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2009), four in outdoor track (1933, 1989, 1990, 2002), four in golf (1940-tie, 1942-tie, 1947, 1955), three in football (1958, 2003, 2007), two in indoor track (2001, 2004), one in boxing (1949).

So much for the "Arkansas adds nothing to the conference" argument.

Take away running and the arguments still holds water, haha.  Same could be said for us and swimming.

Apparently Finebaum didn't do his prep work prior to sucking up to Low in Thursday's interview.

Finebaum's main demographic wouldn't give a shit about any NC other than football.
Why would he spend time on it?

If "running" were easy, everyone would have 40 T&F NC's. :)

I would think gymnastics would count in this.  I was under the impression Alabama had a few titles in gymnastics, no?

I've never considered an event conducted under a scoring system as arbitrary as gymnastics to be a "sport".

I originally had a smartass response to this but realized I more or less agree with you.  I don't know any other sport where true physical athletes are overshadowed by such subjective individual opinion.  With that said, I only said all of that so I could post this video, which I've been crying for 5 minutes in my cubicle from laughing so hard.

Add it to his lengthy list of epic fails.  Life being the primary one for him.
