HUNTSVILLE, AL -- Huntsville police will be looking for people driving under the influence throughout the Fourth of July weekend.

Thanks to a grant from the Northeast Alabama Traffic Safety Office, police will set up several DUI checkpoints around Huntsville through Sunday, police said.

Police released eight checkpoints this week, but said others will be set up during the weekend. Announced checkpoints are:

Winchester Road at Moores Mill Road
Drake Avenue at Newsom Road
Drake Avenue at Chasewood Drive
Pulaski Pike at Sparkman Drive
Bob Wallace Avenue at Leeman Ferry Road
Andrew Jackson Way at Ward Avenue
Jordan Lane at Sparkman Drive
Old Monrovia Road at Providence Main

In addition to checking for DUI offenses, police will also check for a valid driver's license, seat belts and proof of insurance.

Just a heads up have a great 4th.

Isn't the point of a DUI Checkpoint to catch drunk folks by surprise?  Although I'm sure they will still bust quite a few folks this weekend.

I think the proper thing to do is to give notice as a deterrent.  Like an army should prepare for war and hope for none, the best for everyone is to hope that there be no DUIs on the road to arrest.  Like you said, there's probably going to be plenty.
