Rodney Scott, Ole Miss player who aided Auburn DB Zac Etheridge during serious injury, wins sportsmanship award

by Evan Woodberry

Rodney Scott, the Ole Miss player who held perfectly still while medical staff tended to an injured Zac Etheridge, was honored with the SEC sportsmanship award today.

Etheridge sustained what turned out to be a severe neck injury (officially, a cracked fifth vertebra and torn neck ligaments) when he collided with teammate Antonio Coleman while attempting to tackle Scott.

He lay motionless on the field for several minutes before being taken away on a stretcher and transported from the stadium in an ambulance.

"He was just amazing," Chizik said. "He said it was a God thing. He just knew that something was different. It was almost like he couldn't explain it, but he just knew it was different and he just, he laid there. And it was pretty amazing."

Scott and Etheridge have talked on the phone several times since the incident.

As for Etheridge, he still hopes to play football again, and Auburn hasn't ruled out the chance of him playing in 2010.

South Carolina softball player Sam Arbaugh was the other sportsmanship award winner from the SEC.

That was the most awesome thing ever.  It must have been a God thing for real - any other time the players would have just popped up.  He may very well have saved Zac's life.

I hope this kid uses this as a life lesson.

One of the coolest things I've heard about recently.   Good for Mr. Scott.  I hope Zac is there when he receives the award.

I remember watching and thinking 'This looks awful, two guys are down and neither are moving, dammit this is bad.'  Minutes went by and then the Ole Miss guy popped up and I started to realize what I had just seen.  I had never seen an athlete so aware of the situation around him and the kid should be recognized for displaying sportsmanship in a situation that others probably wouldn't have even been aware of to begin with.

And I totally agree. For a moment, its like everyone forgot that there was actually a game.
