For many years I expressed disdain and disrespect.
I scoffed at those who held the game so dear.
I was blinded by ignorance.
I have been shown the light.
I've been watching the Stanley Cup playoffs with my neighbor. He is from Detroit and lives for the Red Wings. I humored him and sat through a few regular season games to get the feel of things. Then I watched some playoff hockey and...I got to tell ya. That shit is intense.
I found myself watching the Penguins game last night. By myself.
So, I guess I've found something to help scratch my off-season itch.

Try attending a game. I did with a friend (also a Red Wings fan) and found it much more entertaining than I initially thought.

Hockey interest would increase exponentially if all sports fans would commit to watching a single playoff series. It's a great sport, no question.
And Token is right on.....actually attending a game is a huge difference. The only other sports that have such an increased entertainment value by actually attending are World Cup level soccer and Formula One racing. Hockey and those two sports are about 100 times better live. And once you've seen them live, watching them on TV becomes so much better as well.

Part of the indoctrination process was attending a minor league game in Pensacola. Very good times.
Most surprising part of attending a hockey game? The women. They love this sport for some reason.

I too started getting into hockey after going to a Thrashers game for a buddy's bachelor party a few years ago.

Ive tried Hockey. Ive went to dozens of Cottonmouths games in Columbus. Few Thrashers game. I just dont have a taste for this game. But I tried.

I have also been to both NHL and minor league games. The Pcola Air Pilots game was the more fun of the two, and that is not saying much. I enjoyed the end of the US - Canada Olympic game - even tho we lost it was exciting. But on a regular basis? No thanks.

The #8 Canadiens pulled even with Pittsburgh and Super Sid.
The Red Wings showed some life...to say the least. Franzen got a hat trick in the FIRST FREAKIN PERIOD...and scored another later for good measure. Still 3-1 is a bitch to overcome.

Welcome to the sport Wes.
I started watching hockey back in 1995 when I went to my first live game. I happened to be in Denver and went to see a Colorado Avalanche game. That was their first year in Colorado and Denver was blowing up with the sport. I fell in love with it right then and have been an Avs fan ever since. My wife is a Red Wings fan since her family is Detroit transplants from when Saginaw opened in Decatur. We have lots of fun since The Avs and Red Wings are like the NHL version of the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry. We both have started following the Predators more since they are less than a couple of hours away and a team we can both pull for.
NHL took the place of the NBA for me. Once Barkley and all the guys in his era retired, the next generation of NBA lost me for good. Like some others said and like most sports, it is much better live, especially if you can get glass seats. Huntsville has a great minor league team and UAH has earned a decent reputation as a college team.

Oh sir, the Giants of New York took on the Packers of Green Bay. And in the end, the Giants triumphed by kicking an oblong ball made of pigskin through a big "H". It was a most ripping victory.
