Practice No. 2

Hey everyone. Auburn's second spring practice has ended. Here's what we have learned:

    * S Daren Bates will be held out of contact drills until two-a-days. He suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder during the LSU game last year. Surgery was performed in January. Bates is in shape and all, but he's lost a lot of weight because upper-body weightlifting is out. So it goes.

    * TB Onterio McCalebb said he's gained 10 pounds since the Outback Bowl. It's from weightlifting. His arms look significantly bigger to me. "O-Dog" said he can feel the extra weight, but it hasn't affected his acceleration.

    * McCalebb is predicting a better season in 2010 because he's not partying as much.

    * Here is the current skill-position array:
          o "9" (outside) -- Darvin Adams, D'Angelo Benton
          o "5" (inside/tight end/utility) -- Phillip Lutzenkirchen, Blake
o "3" (inside/utility) -- Emory Blake, Kodi Burns, Jay Wisner
          o "4" (tailback) -- Mario Fannin/Onterio McCalebb, Dontae Aycock
o "2" (outside) -- Terrell Zachery, Quindarius Carr

    * OL Bart Eddins is running with the first team at left guard. Big Snacks Berry played that spot last season, though he's been slowed after undergoing a relatively minor knee surgery. Eddins is aiming to make that spot his own.

    * Gene Chizik said it's his understanding that S Zac Etheridge will try to play this fall. I haven't spoken with Etheridge to confirm that or understand the medical risks involved.

    * McCalebb is "boys" with Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen, who soon will begin his second season in the majors. They're both from Ft. Meade, Fla., and McCutchen's father was McCalebb's youth pastor.

Auburn practice report: Daren Bates, playing through pain

Daren Bates played half of last season with a torn labrum, but he tried to keep a secret.

"I didn't really tell the trainers because I wanted to play through it,'' he said.

Bates did, starting all 13 games at safety. But the secret got out that his shoulder hurt, and he had surgery in January.

He's back this spring practice -- but now at linebacker.

"It's a hybrid -- I'm in the box and in man coverage,'' he said after Friday's practice.

He'll be limited in contract drills this spring.

Bates said he lost 13 pounds after the surgery. He's back to 205 pounds, but said he wants to be at 215-220 this fall.

**Another player on the scales is running back Onterio McCalebb. Auburn's smallest back arrived on campus last year at 165 pounds. He said he's up to 175 and his goal is 185.

"He's small, but he has the heart of a big guy,'' said fellow tailback Mario Fannin.

A bigger McCalebb might be a healthier McCalebb as well. He was slowed by injuries after the second game of last season.

**Auburn went through its second practice of the spring Friday. Coach Gene Chizik said it went well enough.

"The excitement of the first day was gone so today was more of a focus on the details of the things that we didn't do very well (Wednesday),'' Chizik said. "We have a long way to go but
the tempo of practice was really good, and it was a good learning day."

The Tigers will be in full pads for the first time on Saturday.

Chizik said he'd wait and see the injury report in the morning before determining how physical the practice will be.

**Chizik said he has "very, very high expectations" for linebacker Eltoro Freeman. Everybody had high expectations for him last season, but his season included being left at home for a road game and sporadic playing time on other occasions.

"As I told him - and as I told the whole football team - our standards have gone up," Chizik said.  "If he stays humble, he'll be a lot better football player."

**Defensive back Zac Etheridge isn't doing much as he comes back from last season's neck injury.

"Our expectations are that he's going to try to come back and play football,'' Chizik said.

Right now, Etheridge is taking "baby steps" on his comeback, Chizik said.

**Wide receiver DeAngelo Benton says he's playing behind Darvin Adams, who had 60 catches last season.

"If you're competing against him, he'll make you better. He'll motivate you,'' Benton said.

Benton said he's gained weight and is up to 190 pounds. He said he wants to play at 205 pounds.

Benton sounded like a politician when asked which quarterback was doing well.

"All of them are doing a good job," he said.

**Fannin, who was an H-back last season and ended with more yards receiving than rushing, said he's happy playing the tailback position this spring.

"It's a blessing being able to play tailback at Auburn. There have been a lot of great guys who have come through here, so being part of that tradition is big," Fannin said.

Maybe Cam Newton is already exerting influence as a team leader?  This kind of influence would not be a bad thing...

I've got to channel Kaos here for a second and ask how you made that connection?

This is getting a little out of hand.

Newton has been studying the playbook, watching film and attending voluntary workouts since arriving in Auburn. He hasn't been checking the bar scene, seeing what nightlife Auburn has to offer.

"I've been to parties," Newton told his father. "I've done it all. I've seen it all.
"I'm here on business."

His older brother, Cecil Newton, Jr., recently learned just how serious Newton was about the opportunity at Auburn.

Newton, Jr. was in Panama City, Fla. Saturday on vacation. It was his birthday. He wanted Newton to come down and relax for a day, take the day off and lay by the ocean.

"Cameron said 'thanks, but no thanks'," Newton, Sr. said. "When Cameron said that, I said 'son, you're starting to get the big picture'.

"He didn't want to go because he's real dialed in, real excited. He wants to be locked in come Wednesday."

I have been thinking the same thing with all the Cam love going on...

If you get this excited about a player, you are going to be let down...

If you were really going to channel me you would have asked the follow up:

"Why the screaming orange and pink hell were the coaches allowing his partying to affect his play? That's pretty damn slipshod in the discipline department.  We could have used the bastard late in the season.  If he'd been in the mix and performing at a high level it could have seriously helped us against both UGA and UA. A win in either of those games would have turned an acceptable season into something to celebrate. We desperately needed another option besides Tate against both those teams and he was tuckered out from PARTYING?? WTF??"

 forget the fact that he wasn't 100% and the fact that he's still a kid at a major University.  Hell we partied like a mofo at a small University.  Jumbo and neighbors would throw crazy parties nearly every other night, one of them resulted in burning furniture in a waterless pool.  Hell, even GAs and trainers partied with us.

B. You had no chance to play beyond where you were.

C. What's the point, you won't understand it anyway.

Ontario is in COLLEGE....a Major College at that.  You do realize that most College students go to parties, especially in their first year, right?  You don't have to be a Rocket Scientist to understand that, but I guess in your case....there's always an exception.  Plus, like I've stated before, Ontario wasn't 100% healthy, after the 2nd game, either.

So...
A)  You should shut your face, because every time you open it, you come off looking like a tool.

2)  I have finally come in contact with someone that is a "Jack of all trades, master of none".

9er)  maybe I should put my posts in finger paint, so you could understand them better...what's the use, no matter how factual they are, you'll still try to throw shit at them.
