Title: Recruiting rankings by position
Post by: jadennis on January 21, 2010, 01:33:43 PM
Here are Auburn's rankings by position (according to Rivals).

QB - #10 - 1 recruit (only one team in front of us, #9 BYU, has less than 2 QBs)
RB - #10 - 1 recruit (no one in front of us has fewer than 2 RBs)
WR - #12 - 2 recruits (see "athletes")
TE - #7 - 2 recruits
OL - #1 - 5 recruits (tied with OU)
DT - NR - 1 recruit (adding Whitaker and Jones will make us #1 here, as no one else has three 4-star DTs)
DE - #7 - 3 recruits
LB - #5 - 4 recruits
DB - NR - 2 recruits (see "athletes")
K - #6 - 2 recruits
ATH - #2 - 5 recruits

So out of 11 categories, we are Top 10 in 8 of them, and sure to be Top 10 in another should we land the two DTs we still think we have a good shot at.  Florida is #1 in DTs right now, with two 4-star and one 3-star.  We would pass them.

Anyway, looks pretty good across the board.

By comparison:

Number of Top 10 rated position classes among the 11 categories:
1. Auburn - 8
2. Alabama - 6
2. Florida - 6
2. LSU - 6
5. Georgia - 3
5. Tennessee - 3
7. S Carolina - 2
8. Miss St - 1
9. Ole Miss - 1

Number of Top 15 rated position classes among the 11 categories:
1. Auburn - 10
2. Alabama - 7
2. Florida - 7
4. LSU - 6
5. Miss State - 4
5. Tennessee - 4
7. Georgia - 3
7. S Carolina - 3
9. Ole Miss - 2
10. Vanderbilt - 1

Should we land Whitaker and Jones in our DT class, we would have Top 15 classes in every category....pretty well rounded class I would say.

doesn't AU have commitments from the #1 punter and #1 place kicker in the country?

If so how can AU be ranked #6 for kickers?

or am I imagining things again ..... :)

Clark is the #20 punter and Parkey is the #6 kicker.  He had been #1, but had a much less than stellar showing at the AA game/practices.

All of the teams ranked in front of Auburn had only one kicker that was a 3-star...so their average stars for the position was 3-star.  We had a 3-star (Parkey) and a 2-star (Clark), so our average was 2.5 stars (tied with Alabama and Arkansas for #6).

And you're also probably imagining other things too, I just don't have time to address them all  ;)

Rivals says that kickers shouldn't be rated as highly as other positions because they aren't as important to the physical aspect of the game.  Non-kickers take a beating all game long and are forced to overcome more adversity in order to be successful.  Therefore, kickers are considered a less important position.

Also, Rivals evaluates kickers for three years and then makes their ultimate judgment after one week's worth of practice.  Despite Cody Parkey being the top kicker at multiple camps and having game film that proves he has a strong leg with extreme accuracy, Rivals felt the need to drop him five places after he struggled on a team without a proven long snapper and with a holder that has never held before.

Rivals is run by a bunch of morons.

Kickers are a bunch of fucking head cases, and they can definitely make or break you. Kickers are to football what closing pitchers are to baseball.

Rivals is full of shit on that one.

I thought Parkey was a 4 star?

Thought I'd update this once before NSD.

QB - #11 - 1 recruit (only one team in front of us, #9 BYU, has less than 2 QBs)
RB - #11 - 1 recruit (no one in front of us has fewer than 2 RBs)
WR - #13 - 2 recruits (see "athletes")
TE - #8 - 2 recruits
OL - #1 - 5 recruits (tied with OU)
DT - #6 - 2 recruit
DE - #8 - 3 recruits
LB - #5 - 4 recruits
DB - NR - 2 recruits (see "athletes")
K - #6 - 2 recruits
ATH - #2 - 5 recruits

So out of 11 categories, we are Top 10 in 7 of them, but in the Top 11 in 9 of them....only missing on DBs and WR.

Anyway, looks pretty good across the board.

By comparison:

Number of Top 10 rated position classes among the 11 categories:
1. Auburn - 7
2. Alabama - 6
2. Florida - 6

5. Tennessee - 3
7. S Carolina - 2
8. Miss St - 1
9. Ole Miss - 1

Number of Top 15 rated position classes among the 11 categories:
1. Auburn - 10
2. Alabama - 7
3. Florida - 6
4. LSU - 5
4. Tennessee - 5

7. Miss State - 3

10. Vanderbilt - 1
10. Arkansas - 1
