Title: Official, "Thanks Vols, but NO THANKS" coaching search thread...
Post by: jadennis on January 15, 2010, 11:05:53 AM
Since this is dragging out to joyfully embarrassing proportions for Tennessee, I thought maybe we should have a thread to keep track of all the rejections Tennessee is getting.

1. Lane Kiffin - HC USC
2. John Gruden -
3. Will Muschamp - DC Texas
4. Troy Calhoun - HC Air Fource
5. David Cutcliff - HC Duke
6. Kyle Whittingham - HC Utah

Rumor
6. Lovie Smith - HC Chicago Bears

I'm sorry, but there is no fucking way they get Lovie Smith.  Unless they give him a bajillion dollars, which is impossible because it is a made up number.

I think Derek Dooley will be the next head coach.

I agree, and his name is just probably being floated because he coached there in the 90s.

And are you sure bajillion is made up?  I thought it was right after 999 kajillion.

He could be....and he may be a great fit....but I'm still a little confused about it.  They were 8-5 last year and had a lot coming back, which is why they were supposed to be a tough out for Auburn to start the year.  They had all this experience and returning starters and we had a new staff and new system.

Well they rode that experience to 4-8 this year.  I know I know, we hired a guy that was 5-19.  But still, he went from 8-5 and high expectations to 4-8.  We'll see.

They asked Jon Gruden before going to Muschamp with the U-Haul of $$$$$$$ and he politely declined.

The fact that they are getting snubbed by so many not-so-awesome coaches doesn't necessarily mean they don't end up with a good coach. It could, but not necessarily.

Remember the circus show that was uat's coaching search before they found their lord and savior?

This is true. However, is there one of "those" out there? I thought Cutcliffe made the most sense. However, they wouldn't let him have the staff he wanted and he turned them down.

Beggars can't be choosers.

Very true...and most likely they will end up with a quality coach.

It's just fun to watch them suffer.  I used to have no issue with Tennessee...they were just another SEC team I didn't like, but nothing personal.  But after this year, when Kiffin was there, and when I ventured onto VolNation to chat in their forums...I developed a healthy disdain for them....basically bammers in orange to me now.

Radio station in Tenn is announcing that Derek Dooley will be named new head coach shortly.  Apparently, it came down to Dooley or Kippy.  Everyone else turned them down.

Looks like poor Kippy Brown will be looking for his 13th job in 32 years.  That guy has been everywhere....and some places three times.

How many times has Gruden turned down a job since last year?  Honestly, I am glad he will be back in he booth.  MNF no longer needs to be muted.  He has been great for it.

He's an upgrade over Tony Kornholer. Mike Turico and Jaws still suck though.

Mel Kiper said BMFPetrino turned down the USC job.

That Mitch Mustain reunion probably wasn't high on his list.

Agree 100%.

It is nice to have someone in the booth that has coached and won a SB before.  He actually knows what he is talking about and it's nice to listen to him break down a play on replay.  He points out things that you sometimes miss or weren't looking for.   Now, if MNF can get a couple more like him in the booth...........

I thought it was funny but didn't know where it came from until Chizad enlightened me.

Apparently it's not over.

Quote
Louisiana Tech football coach Derek Dooley, son of legendary coach Vince Dooley, has emerged as the top candidate to replace Lane Kiffin as Tennessee's football coach, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Friday.

An announcement could be made by Tennessee officials as early as Friday. However, a source told ESPN.com that the deal is not finalized and that Houston's Kevin Sumlin remains a possibility.

Kiffin left the program Tuesday to become the coach at USC.

Dooley, in his third season at Louisiana Tech, also is the school's athletic director. He played football at Virginia and has a law degree from Georgia. He was a recruiting coordinator and an assistant coach on Nick Saban's staff at LSU.

Earlier Friday, Duke coach David Cutcliffe withdrew his name from consideration in Tennessee's search. A former offensive coordinator with the Vols, Cutcliffe had talks with Tennessee on Thursday.

According to a report on The Salt Lake Tribune's Web site, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham was offered the Vols job but turned it down Thursday morning, sources told the newspaper.

Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, the Longhorns' head coach-in-waiting, earlier this week turned down a lucrative offer from Tennessee, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com.

Kippy Brown, in his third stint at Tennessee, is the Vols' interim coach. Brown on Wednesday said he's been told that he also would be considered for the permanent head-coaching job.
