Title: Just sharing news from the SKREETS
Post by: jadennis on January 12, 2010, 06:15:28 PM
Apparently Dyer and Mosley are going to Auburn this weekend for the sole purpose of recruiting Thornton and Whitaker (and d-lineman Byran Jones, who may actually ride with them to Auburn).

I also saw some reassuring quotes from Trovon Reed about his visit to LSU.  He pretty much reiterated how firm he is to Auburn (where's Birdman for a pun when you need him).  He said he's going to visit, but he's Auburn all the way and that they "just have to respect" his decision.

That's all good news.

This would make me very happy indeed.

It is sure nice hearing how these kids that are already committed to Auburn are also recruiting hard for Auburn. I do believe that we can and will get the rest of the guys we've got on our main board. Man, what a cruiten season this has been.

I saw something interesting about Thornton, and figured I would follow-up on this post.

Quote
Auburn was considered the favorite to land the talented tackle, but Georgia could jump in with the Rivals250 target because of a possible gaffe in his recruitment. Thornton decided not to visit to Auburn last week and he says the Tigers overplayed their hand in his recruitment and it turned the talented defensive tackle off.

"I don't know what happened with Auburn, they were in the lead, but I don't know what happened down there, they started panicking. That is all I have to say about Auburn, they started panicking, so that was it," Thornton said.

The Tigers seemed to be waiting on either Jeffrey Whitaker or Thornton to make a decision, but Thornton thinks something else caused Auburn's staff to increase their pressure on him and in the end it may have bit them.

"As it was winding down they said I should make my decision right then and there," he said. "I did not feel like that was the right thing for me to do without talking to my family first. I don't want to be a guy who bounces around." said Thornton.
Soooo, what is that "something else" that caused them to turn the pressure up?

Rampant drug abuse, hookers, and a vicious game of tug of war...

I find that incredibly hard to believe.

Could it have happened like this?

Coaches: Hey we have this Jones kid coming in for a visit and it looks like he is interested.
Thorton: Oh
Coaches, Yeah, Now we have recruited you longer and offered you first.  We need to know where we stand for sure    with you.  Are you committing or do we need to go another route?
Thorton: Look at other options.

Not so far fetched IMO.  If you have the #2 ranked player in the state coming in for a visit this close to NSD, then you need to know for sure where you stand on others so you know if you are wasting your time or not.

I 100% believe this to be what happened. I wish the kid wouldn't have spoken out like he did, but I think the coaches were ready to fish or cut bait. There is a time in sales when you say, "alright, we have talked a whole hell of a lot, but I have other customers and prospects I really need to see. I really want to do business with you, but we can't keep doing things like this. Do you want to buy from me or not? Because if not, I need to find someone that does."

I have no idea what happened, but I have a hard time believing it to be anything other than what AUTiger1 posted. No one has ever said anything about these coaches "pressuring" or "panicking"...ever...

I believe it too. I just think he twisted things with his skewed point of view.

Seriously, I mean the Auburn coaches panicked because they had 3 other strong possibilities on the DL.

Indecisiveness of others leads to frustration and impatience. I can totally understand the coaches' position. Some of these kids try to play folks and I hate that shit. Kudos to the coaches for getting past all of the bullshit of others.

Exactly. I'd be pissed if they didn't start putting pressure on him two weeks from signing day with comparable DT prospects showing interest. If they had sat around with their thumbs up their asses, then Thornton pulls a hat trick to UGA and we turned away a guy like Jones, then I'd be pissed.
