Just announced. Not unexpected I guess.
Tuberville? I hope not.
-
Damn, that didn't take very long.
Tubs would be a horrible fit at TT. JMO
-
Lesson:
If you're going to put Baby in the corner, make sure Baby's Daddy is on Law & Order, not ESPN.
-
True, but really, TT has had it in for Leach ever since they went through that big contract dispute. It's kind of the same situation Tuberville had, but they got him in a few months, not years.
-
Damn he built that program?

You're right, he is their best coach, but they have a decent history. Spike Dykes was another well known coach, and they were pretty good in the 70s, winning 55 games from 1972 to 1978 (including 11 wins in 73 and 10 wins in 76).
They've only been playing 85 years, so they only have 510 wins, but they're 510-393, which isn't bad.
They've never finished in the Top 10, although they've finished with two or fewer losses 11 times.
But Leach is definitely the best they've had. TT has won 8 games 16 times since 1950, 8 of which have come under Leach. He's won at least 8 games eight straight years, which is pretty damn good. It's like someone doing that at Ole Miss.

TT screwed up here. Especially since there is NOTHING proven that the man did anything wrong. This was just the crease they were looking for to fire him.

Nobody can win there. It's a hellhole. I heard there were people who had lived around there and could tell you first hand. The air just isn't right and they don't have enough Starbucks.

Except here there was no performance issues or internal issues on the staff/team. This was pure innuendo on one players part who used daddy's bully pulpit to get heads rolling. While they may seem similar, these are 2 very different situations. The TTU Ath Dept actually made ours not look like the worst in D1.

It is different overall, but it's the same in that the TT administration can't stand Leach and has been looking for a reason to fire him. Just like the powers that be at Auburn had been waiting since 2003 to fire Tuberville, the Texas Tech jokers were looking for any reason to fire Leach.
Personally I don't think the James factor had much to do with it. His daughter also goes there....he likes the school. In fact, the kid is a walk-on...he chose to go play for Leach and could have left at any time (without losing a scholarship or anything like that).
What I mean is, because the administration there already hated Leach, James never had to pull any strings or throw around any ESPN weight to get Leach fired or anything like that.
They signed him to that deal last year while cussing his name. Not to mention, they now avoid paying him an employment bonus of $800,000 due tomorrow. Ultimately, they hated him and finally got their way out of him.

Right....but wasn't that avenue to unemployment paved with much greater ease when ESPN is telling the world that you abuse your players?
Would that story have been newsworthy without James's relationship to the broadcasting giant?

Actually, he is a scholarship player. He had no offers from a D1 team and he played on TT's baseball team. Bottom line, he was given a scholarship as a favor to his father. Leach and the WR coach at the time watched a highlight tape put together by James' father. The WR coach did not want him, but Leach overruled him and offered a scholarship.

Bet he regrets that shit now.
Lesson #2:
Never do a favor.

I think so. You might be right, maybe it wouldn't be quite a big of a story.
But to me, Tech suspended their coach from the team's bowl game....that was the lead in the story when it broke. In fact, the first time I heard about it was on the radio and the person reading the story said "...player Adam Jones". I know it's an added part of the story, but a team suspending their coach, then the coach announcing he and his lawyers expect him to get fired (because they already knew the admins wanted to do it), then actually firing him...to me, all of that is the story, far more than the fact that the kid was James' son.
It makes it more interesting, and is another note in the story....but to me the story is Leach getting canned. He's a bit of a coaching icon (not to be confused with legend). I think the fact that his team was #2 in the country at one point last year makes this a bigger deal too, because the program has been at a peak of national recognition the last 18 months or so.
He's won 70 games in the last 8 years, never less than 8 in a year. He hasn't lost to Oklahoma in Lubbock since 2003. I know you don't need to know all this, or already do know it, I'm just saying it's why, to me, him being fired is all the reason for the story being as big as it is.
-

I think it would have in a period shortly after the Mangino / Kansas situation. Kind of like when a shark attack happens in the gulf. Once a year, you probably don't hear much, a couple a month and ever nibble is making national news.

Jeezus. Maybe I need to use the stupid smiley faces so you can understand.

Actually JA, James was on scholly. And it was 100% due to Leach. No other coaches on the staff or any other D1 schools wanted to offer this guy. Leach did this kid a favor.
-
What are the skreets saying?
The skreets are saying that the South Florida higher ups still want him to be their HC. Now if he starts putting his name out there for coaching searches only to get the higher ups to give him more money, locking players in closets then refuse to apologize for his actions...then that's a different story.
-
Heard Tyler Watts on The Round Table yesterday discussing this story. He said the only hazing/crazy stuff that happened at Alabama was binding the kickers and holding them down in the shower.
:fag:

Who in the hell are they going to get to replace him? Any thoughts on who would make a good fit?
After reading a few articles and after seeing the "shed" and the "guarded room" that he was put in, it seems to me that AJ might have been what we like to call a pussy. Better to be sitting in a shed with an ice machine and fan, than to be getting your skull cracked when you have a concussion. I heard on ESPN this morning that Leach cussed him. Well boo-fucking-hoo. He needs to man up, grow a pair and get over it IMO.

ESPN and most of the other sports outlets are riding Craig James' wiener on this one. They have drawn the line and made it be known which side they stand on. Fuck them and fuck this little cocky, spoiled brat for causing this to happen needlessly.

This would've been "water under the bridge" had Leach apologized for his actions.
-
This would've been "water under the bridge" had Leach apologized for his actions.
Exactly. Once it came out, it had to be dealt with and from the sounds of things, Leach wanted nothing to do with smoothing things over or apologizing. I don't blame him for feeling that way, but he's not an owner/operator of his own business, he works for Texas Tech, and when you work for someone, sometimes you have to do what you have to do to keep your job. (and it's not like they were asking him to do something ridiculous by asking him to apologize and work it out).
In the big picture, this whole things sucks. It's just another example of society going soft on us. Boo hoo, wussy football player got his feelings hurt. Would does the WWII generation think of what we've become? It's so embarrassing how we've sissified everything. You can't discipline your kids without CPS taking you to court. Schools can't spank kids anymore. You can't even play dodge-ball in school anymore. Why? Because some kids might get hit and be embarrassed.
What's next, coaches can't yell at kids? Can't make them run extra when they break rules? Why don't we just cancel football and make everyone play chess? If we have to get back into a huge, draft-type, manpower war, we're in trouble because too many kids have grown up under the "don't hurt my feelings" umbrella of today's "protective" government BS. Okay, that may be a stretch, but we are headed down cry-baby road and it won't be long before the wussies outnumber the men.

That's what the bammers are hoping.
I haven't seen any mass hysteria from Alabama fans over Malzahn. Nor have I seen it from Arkansas, Kentucky, LSU, Tennessee, or UGA fans. Malzahn has shown he can be very good when he is running scripted plays. But when he actually has to adjust or adapt against a decent defense because they are stopping something? Things don't go so well. Alabama fans aren't paniced over what happened in the Iron Bowl. What happened there is sort of the same thing that we did to UF. Came out with a bunch of new formations, ran some different personnel sets, and played extremely hard and well, and get the other team off balance. As soon as Alabama adjusted and got in their game, Malzahn's offense gained like 150 yards over the next three quarters.
I know you want us to be terrified, but his offense hasn't really given anybody other than Ball State, La Tech, and Furman a reason to panic. For that matter, Alabama's offense is pretty much even statistically, and its a straightforward no-nonsense offense. Not much razzle dazzle to it or anything. Fairly predictable.
-

Fuck that. If he REALLY didn't do the shit they are accusing him of, if I were him, I wouldn't apologize for it either. I doubt it was as bad as James alleges, and I doubt it was as good as Leach says. The truth is probably somewhere there in the middle. Bottom line though, I'm not going to apologize for something I didn't do, or something that didn't happen the way the accuser says it happened.

You’re a mother-fathering Prophet.
From another board (You know where)…
Apparently this was included in the print version of the New York Times today, but was later retracted from the online version.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/31/sports/ncaafootball/31leach.html?_r=2 (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/31/sports/ncaafootball/31leach.html?_r=2)
A person with direct knowledge of the tension between Leach and Texas Tech said that Craig James used his position at ESPN to lobby Texas Tech coaches for more playing time for his son.
“He called the coaches and implored them to play his son more and insinuated he would say good things about them on the air if they played his son more,” said the person, who was granted anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the issue. “At one point Leach said to James, ‘The next time your father leaves any of us a voice mail to that effect we’re going to play it to the entire team.’ ”
The person said Leach’s attorney sent a letter to ESPN executives informing them of this. An ESPN spokesman said that ESPN was not immediately available to comment.
It isn’t much of a leap from “more playing time for my little lazy-ass, pussy, girlie-son = good things said on air” to “my lazy-ass, pussy, girlie-son continues to ride the pine = bad things said on air.”
If I were CJ’s attorney, I’d advise him to set up a group in his cell phone that includes all the women he has phone numbers for, go all Salsbury on them, announce he’s taking a CUM LOA from ESPiN, and then check into rehab.

Here are some e-mails between donors/alumni and administrators. These e-mails are from the contract negotiation earlier in the year, but it kind of gives you an idea of the mentality.

This is like a douche-fest.
Leach = Douche. Congrats to Jay Jacobs for ignoring his request for an interview. Still an epic fail on the coaching search front, but at least he wasn't distracted by shiny objects.
The James family = Douches. I never liked Craig James. Ever. This episode confirms my general disdain.
I tend to agree with the people writing these communications. His offer was more than fair. Leach was a douche for trying to wring more out of it.
