Title: Mike Leach is an old school hard ass...

... and is supposedly suspended.

Quote
LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech coach Mike Leach has been suspended while the school investigates complaints from a player and his family about treatment after an injury.

The school said in a release Monday defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill will be the interim coach and lead the team in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Jan. 2 against Michigan State. McNeill will remain in charge of the team until the investigation is complete.

The player, Adam James, is a redshirt sophomore wide receiver for the Red Raiders and the son of ESPN college football analyst Craig James.

Sources told ESPN's Joe Schad that the Jameses felt Adam was treated inappropriately by Leach because he was unable to practice after a mild concussion. A source close to the James family told Schad that Leach directed a trainer to confine him to an equipment room for three hours and, days later, told a trainer to place James in an electrical closet. An attorney for Leach said that while James was secluded twice, the circumstances were not as portrayed by the James family.

"Mr. and Mrs. James took the step with great regret and after consideration and prayer to convey to the Texas Tech administration that their son had been subjected to actions and treatment not consistent with common sense rules for safety and health," the family said in a statement released on Monday.

The statement went on to say they felt the matter was important to "protect all the fine young men involved in Tech football and the University's reputation for developing and educating young men and women.

"Over the past year, there has been a greatly enhanced recognition of the dangers of concussions and the potential for long term physical damage to players. At virtually every level of football coaching, cases where children and young men have sustained concussions have generated serious discussion of the importance of correct treatment and diagnosis."

The Red Raiders went 8-4 this season.

Leach did not immediately return a call or a text message from The Associated Press seeking comment. A message left on McNeill's cell phone was not immediately returned.

There's been internal strife this season with the Red Raiders and Leach has resorted to some tongue-lashing.

He chastised players after a loss to Texas A&M in October for listening to "their fat little girlfriends," and thinking the Aggies were a pushover. And after the Red Raiders' loss at then-No. 12 Houston in September, Leach suspended indefinitely starting offensive lineman Brandon Carter for violating team rules.

The loss to the Cougars was the second straight for the Red Raiders, who had fallen 34-24 at No. 2 Texas in an early Big 12 matchup. This season is the first since 2002 -- Leach's third season -- that the Red Raiders dropped two of their first four games.

That same week Leach banned his players from having Twitter pages after linebacker Marlon Williams asked on his account why he was still in a meeting room when "the head coach can't even be on time."

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Somehow I doubt the way the player described it is true.  Three versions of every story and all

Why are young people big hairy pussies today? Hell, 25 years ago, a guy couldn't get a drink of water at practice in July without having his sexuality called into question. We were tough. You didn't get a concussion - you got the coach's foot in your ass .... literally. Now we have a country full of crybabies.

Pussies.

Some of his former players are saying they loved cooling off in that shed which is beside the practice field.

Here are some e-mails from coaches, former coaches, and former TT players that were forwarded to CBS Sports:

Sounds like the TT PTB might have had a little case of Auburnitis and tried to jump the gun on this whole firing Leach thing. Apparently there are still some sore vaginas over the bitter contract negotiation earlier in the year.

Whole thing is political BS. James got his feelings hurt. And he was hardly locked in solitary confinement in a "tool shed". He had a concussion. They were trying to get him somewhere out of the sunlight, because the darker the better for a concussion. The Dr was there, the Head Trainer was there and a GTA was there. This is all crap. And Craig James and ESPN should shut their yaps. Ole Daddy James needs to also quit trying to micromanage his kid's career and the TT FB team. Leach will end of getting fired for this - for no reason. Sad really.

Well said.  If I ever run into you, remind me I owe you a drink!

Ran into one of my old HS coaches a year or two ago and asked him how the team was going.  He said that is was going pretty good, but there work ethic sucked and they were a bunch of pussies who complained all the time.  He said the difference between them and my team was that we feared them, did what we were told, worked hard and didn't bitch about being hurt b/c we wanted to play.  He said now days, you chew a kids ass out, they tell their parents or straight out quit.

The more that comes out on this the more it sounds like a witch hunt for Leach's head.   When all this is over, if he keeps his job or not, he should beat the piss out of Craig James and his kid.   Look, I know that injuries can be serious and a concussion can be some bad shit, but then again, don't be a whiny bitch.  It's football, not knitting class, and shit gets tore up sometimes. Listen to the Dr and trainers, they are there for a reason.  You live with it and go on and hopefully you recover.  If not, then fuck it, it's not like he can't earn a degree and still do something with his life.

Raymond Farmer, a damn good coach at Etowah High School during the 90's was forced out 2 years after I graduated.  We went to the Super Six my sophomore, junior and senior season, winning 5A in '99.  During his time as headcoach, players such as....

Carnell Williams
Derrick Nix
Tyrone Nix
Reggie Worthy
Tommy Worthy
Ed Scissom
Freddie Kitchens
Patrick Nix
Kevin Worthy
Toderick Malone
Trent Garmon

....went on to play Div 1 football.  Seriously, the guy was a damn good coach, and a serious hard ass.  He was forced out after 2001 because some underclassmen told their mommies that big, bad, Coach Farmer called them a bunch of pussies.

Etowah has sucked ass since, and they deserve every loss they acquire.

I think that if TT wasn't after Leach's head in the first place, that this wouldn't even make it to the public.

Good point RWS. I think you are right. This was the opening they needed. Does TT need to be reminded who they were before Leach? I remember the last couple of years when they werent even willing to give the man a raise until he started looking at other schools. If I'm Leach, I say fuck it - go somewhere else where he will be appreciated. Is he a little quirky? Hell yes, very. The pirate fetish is downright weird. But he is a good dude and a good coach who gets a lot out of his players. 84 wins in 10 years at a school that had never even had a 10 win season before. He BUILT that program.
