Title: Auburn after JC QB Cameron Newton?
Post by: jadennis on December 10, 2009, 03:35:36 PM
I know this is recruiting related, but thought it was more of a broad story.

I just read this on ESPN.com

Quote
Auburn's future seemed set at quarterback, until last week. True freshman Tyrik Rollison was supposed to take over for the departed Chris Todd, and he was supposed to be a four-year starter. But that scenario seems less likely after Rollison was suspended for undisclosed reasons. He will miss the Outback Bowl.

The Birmingham News' Evan Woodbury says, at this point, senior Neil Caudle has the upper hand on the starting job for next season. But the wild-card scenario is that they'll look to the junior college ranks for a quarterback.

The Tigers have shown they aren't afraid to pick up and play a JUCO player. Todd was a JUCO transfer, and they secretly recruited Jeremiah Masoli, who is now a star at Oregon. Woodbury, however, says Auburn isn't planning to add another QB, but Rollison's suspension -- depending on how serious it is -- might change the equation.

The headliner for this JUCO class is Blinn College (Texas) quarterback Cameron Newton, a 6-foot-6, 245-pound JaMarcus Russell clone (in a good way). Auburn is reportedly recruiting him, as well as Mississippi State, Kansas State, Arizona, Oklahoma and North Carolina.

Scouts Inc. said of the former Florida commit, "Newton is a monster of an athlete and huge pocket passer with deceptive speed and quickness. He looks like an athletic receiving tight end. Essentially we would describe him as a pocket passer with the ability to get out of trouble and make some plays with his legs when he has to."

He's a 5-star with a 6.1 rating by Rivals, and is a dual threat QB at 6'6" and 245 lbs.  He signed with Florida in 2007 as the #2 QB but didn't qualify (how is that possible, I thought only Tuberville signed players that didn't qualify?  )

Quotes:

"I'll say (the schools I'm considering are) Oklahoma, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Auburn and Kansas State," Newton said.

"I'm going to take my visit to Oklahoma on (Dec.) 11, and I plan to visit K-State Auburn and North Carolina."

That's all fine and well...but WTF is going on with Rollison?  I need more info about this suspension, STAT.

I still haven't seen anywhere for sure about what he did, but I did read (in a "don't paste this to another site" post) that he is expected to be back in good standing by spring, maybe sooner.

So will it really affect his standing with the team and allow Caudle to step up into QB1?  B/c most accounts I've read or heard have Rollison taking the reigns over next year...although I still guess he has to earn it in Spring Practice.

Didn't say, just said they've been told he is expected to be back in good standing before spring (or sooner).

Cameron Newton did qualify out of high school. We recruited him but ultimately decided to pursue Kodi harder. Newton signed and enrolled at Florida but was kicked off the team for stealing a laptop out of somebody's dorm.

I dont think Auburn has offered Newton a scholarship, and probably want because he is not a sure thing to qualify and the Auburn coaches are not trying to waste scholarships on those that they are that unsure about.

Shit, he could have gone to Bama and got one for free.

poop, he could have gone to Bama and got one for free.

They could save the money and could have gave Newton the one Jerrell Harris had to give up.

Good character is very essential as an offensive leader. Not so much on defense. This would be a hard sell for me.

Don't have to be good in character to be a great leader.
Ghandi, Napoleon, Stalin, Hitler, Castro...... Obama.

Great leaders, great bullshitters, not so great on the "good people" scale.

From what I've been told since I first posted this is that we're not actively recruiting him.  I guess we made contact at some point, maybe checked him out, but even though he lists us as somewhere he plans on visiting, he doesn't appear to actually have an offer.

The guy could have learned his lesson.  You know, stolen something, got busted for it and then decided not to do bad stuff again?  That kind of thing.  Just sayin...

Please, don't waste anymore of the court's time.  We'll just suspend his sentence and give him unsupervised probation.  Does the state owe your client any restitution??
