Title: What's the truth?
Post by: wesfau2 on October 08, 2009, 09:19:56 AM: I keep seeing Hog fans (well, one particular Hog fan) over at woopig saying that our secondary sucks.

I think the coverage has been fine, it's the tackling that needs help. Has any QB really torched us when it mattered? Seems like Crompton got plenty of late-game yards and one garbage TD, but nothing else worked for him.

What's the truth here?

Walt McFadden - Sr.
Neiko Thorpe - So.
Zac Etheridge - Jr.
Darren Bates - Fr.

Are these guys no bueno? I like 'em.

I've just been questioning the defensive schemes most of the season and what I saw against Tennessee absolutely scares me for this weekend. They cannot, cannot, cannot rush 4 all night against this team.

McFadden has been buttah, Thorpe is athletic and improving but he's still nowhere near a lock down corner.

Post by: Buzz Killington on October 08, 2009, 09:32:48 AM: They gave up two garbage TDs on Saturday IMO. One right before halftime and the other at the end of the game. I really think it was mainly due to the scheme Roof had for that game. They were determined to stop the run.

Other than those two drives, the only time I can honestly say the secondary has looked rough was the first half of the La Tech game, before adjustments were made to close up the middle of the field.

I'm just afraid that the depth at LB will end up giving Arcansaw the middle all game long with the RBs coming out of teh backfield and the short slant routes.

Post by: jadennis on October 08, 2009, 10:33:13 AM: They aren't bad, but none of them are Champ Bailey like shut down corners. There isn't anyone out there that you think "don't throw to his side". I do feel like we're better against the deep ball in general.

Where we are likely to get hurt are underneath routs and stuff out in the flat, or anything that requires linebackers to cover beyond 5 yards.

Our passing defense in general isn't great, but it's not terrible and isn't specific to the DBs....in my worthless opinion.
