Title: Kodi and the Wildcat
Post by: AUsweetheart on October 01, 2009, 10:46:33 AM
Seems like KB is going to play this weekend against UT. I think Kodi is a great team leader, so I definitely think he should be out there...but I kind of wanted to gauge some of the thoughts on the effectiveness of the wildcat so far.
I really can't be objective, I love that kid.

 So, thoughts?

Did you know I ran the wildcat back in the day? People say I am a born leader too. Want my number?

I think it was the best thing that Malzahn could have done in terms of keeping Kodi's pysche in check and making him a contributor to the offense.  He is athletic, and Malz is making the most of his athleticism and keeping everybody happy in this offense.

The Wildcat has been pretty effective so far in my view.  It's doing exactly what it's designed to do and Kodi is athletic and experienced enough to get the 4-5-6 yards they need just about every time.  I thought they used it a few plays too many in the first game though.

Oh, I have your number.

It's 4.  As in 4".  NTTAWWT

I think the reason Kodi is effective in the Wildcat is that he also has a legitimate ability to throw.  The fact that he was a QB makes him that much harder to defend (see the TD pass to Lutz against MS State).

It's a hard thing for me to get my head around (just as it was/is with Tebow in his first season).   You see Kodi in there and chances are 90% that he's going to tuck and dart over tackle.  And yet he keeps bursting through the line and picking up yards.

How can defenses not stop that?

If he were just a little better at throwing the ball, I think it could be devastating.  After the MSU game he very, very, very, very clearly indicated that his role with the team was a "this year" thing and he intends to go back to QB next season.   If the young man can work on his passing game, he could be seriously unstoppable.  Think Tebow, but quicker, more elusive and with a better arm...  I doubt Kodi will be circumcising Phillipinos, but you never know.

So in sum?  I like the possibilities it gives us.  He throws just ONE complete pass down the field -- really just one -- and it adds a dimension to the game that will cause DC's ulcers.

Agreed.

It works because D's know that any play could be the play where he actually DOES throw it downfield.

Agreed. That's what I'm waiting for. That one shot he took against WVU could have been beautiful.

It is very successful and also very devastating.  Hence, why a lot of NFL teams now have a wildcat package.

I have a wildcat package too.  At least that's what the ladies tell me.  I assume anyway that a cute little tabby is a wildcat, right?

After seeing Caudle's speed and running ability, why not get him a few reps at wildcat? He does have the ability to throw the ball as well as run it. I was not all that excited about him being the backup, but after seeing him run the ball, he might just be pretty exciting in this offense.

I like the way Kodi gets yards, but like someone else said, he is way too predictable when he's in there. And anytime he raises his arm to throw, I cover my eyes.

I used to feel the same way about Zeebedee (real name) when I taught eighth grade.  No telling WHAT he was about to say.

It's a trap.

Malzahn is setting up a very specific play he wants to run against Alabama in the third quarter.  He's giving Saban just the right 30 minutes of Kodi film to watch to insure it works.

A quadruple reverse flea flicker to Wes Byrum for a TD?   ...  Everybody see's that coming.

Yeah, but he's going to run two plays for a loss to get to 4th and 17.  That is statistically the down and distance on which you would least likely run a quadruple reverse flea flicker to your kicker.

Actually, Kodi will throw to himself, disguised as Byrum - since they wear the same jersey number, Burns will actually do a reverse of Robert Downey in Tropic Thunder - he'll just roll around in all-purpose flour like Chizad's girlfriend - pure genius

Damn it man! You have reminded of my own 10 yr old son everytime we have company. I have to threaten his ass within an inch of his life. Sometimes it still doesnt work.

Zeb was 16 or maybe 17.  When he was in eighth grade, he kicked down the door of a motel room and stabbed a guy who was banging his 22 year old girlfriend.   Stabbed him more than a dozen times.  He was in class while out on bail awaiting trial.

He came to school because he got free breakfast and free lunch.  That was the only reason.

He's in there with a bunch of 12 and 13 year olds.  They were as terrified of him as i pretended not to be.

Kids do say the darndest things.

In that same class I had a young man who had a habit of taking his rod out and beating the seat of the desk with it.

As a followup? The desk beater got a degree in engineering after a stint in juvie woke his little ass up.  Zeb was convicted, spent several years in prison where he had a religious conversion and is now a bespectacled, mild-mannered minister.

Meanwhile, I saw in the paper where one of the most intelligent kids in that class was arrested last week for meth production. He'd pissed away his opportunities in college, got a dim little redneck girl pregnant,  gotten a job at the local plant and been laid off.

Ya just never know.

I can remember some of the same cases for those in my class in school. One kid seriously could sleep through the whole class waking up to take a test and ace it. Guy could of done anything he wanted with those kinds smarts but he later became a drug addict. He was picked up by someone who knew him as the guy was walking to Panama City from Oneonta AL. You couldnt carry on a conversation with him at all. Too much acid.

On the other hand, one fella was seriously made fun of in school for being too religious. Now the guy is a very successful business man married to a freakin super model. Whos laughing now, right?

I'll have to take back the kid you mentioned reminding me of my son at this point. Good gosh man, that Zeb has some issues, but in the end it sounds that he is in possibly the best palce he could be. Not jail, but spiritual peace.

I do respect your position as a teacher, especially if it was in this state. The oldest of my two young brothers is at Jacksonville right now in hopes of being a teacher. Thats a hard but under paid job.
