Scarbinsky: University of Alabama probes fishing trip

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

taken by Julio Jones, Mark Ingram:
It's not a fish story. Close friends and University of Alabama football stars Julio Jones and Mark Ingram did go fishing together during the offseason.
It was the involvement of a third party who paid for the trip -- Curtis Anderson of Athens -- that led the Alabama compliance department to investigate, as a precaution, for potential NCAA violations.

It's an example of how vigilant a high-profile football program must be.

Alabama officials said they've sent the results of their recently concluded investigation to the Southeastern Conference office, which in turn shares that information with the NCAA.

''The university is aware of Mr. Anderson and has taken appropriate steps," said a statement from Deborah Lane, Alabama's assistant to the president and assistant vice president for university relations.

''Mr. Anderson is not affiliated with UA. He is not a UA booster, fan or alumnus, and is not a UA season ticket-holder. In fact, Mr. Anderson told us that all of his family are fans of another SEC school."

Because Anderson isn't considered a representative of Alabama's athletics interests, it's not expected that the wideout Jones and the running back Ingram will be suspended from any games.

But no one can know for sure until the NCAA rules. Expect a decision before Alabama opens its season Sept. 5 against Virginia Tech.

Anderson can't believe it's gone this far.

''If they try to hurt those two guys," Anderson said. He didn't finish that sentence, but during a phone interview, he was clearly bothered by even the remote prospect that two young men he calls friends might be punished for helping him make a wish come true.

Anderson is the owner of Eagle Wholesale Supply in Athens. He paid for a fishing charter in the spring with Jones and Ingram from the Alabama Gulf Coast. Jones is from nearby Foley.

But there's so much more to the story.

''I didn't carry them fishing," Anderson said. ''They carried me fishing. I can't even stand up by myself."

Literally.

He said he has degenerative disk disease, among a long list of physical ailments, and has been through six major operations.

He said, before his physical problems began, he was an outdoorsman who hunted and fished throughout the United States and Canada.

''For seven years, I haven't been able to go fishing," Anderson said.

''I wanted to go one more time. I said, 'If I can get a hook in one fish, I'll be happy.'"

Anderson said the charter boat captain was reluctant to let him take the trip because of his physical condition. He said they were supposed to travel 28 miles out but made it only six miles because he couldn't go any farther.

He said the trip was possible only because Jones and Ingram physically carried him onto the boat and supported him while on-board.

Anderson, who lives in Athens but also has a condo in Gulf Shores, wouldn't discuss how they met. But he said he'd been friends with Jones, who is from Foley, and Ingram for ''a long time."

He said they became friends, in large part, because he didn't know they were football players when they met.

''When I was told, 'This is Julio Jones,' I said, 'Whoopty-do.' I had no idea who Julio Jones was. I've got my right hand on this Bible. I swear to Jesus Christ, I had no idea who Julio Jones and Mark Ingram were when I met them and they became friends of mine.

''I didn't know for weeks and months."

Anderson said he's simply not a football fan.

''I don't have nothing to do with football at all," he said. ''I don't give a dang if anybody wins or loses."

Nor have his conversations with the players involved football, he said.

''Every single time I've talked to them -- ask anybody that knows me that has heard the conversations -- I say, 'How many days did you spend in the library this week? What are your grades? You tell me the honest truth.'

''They're personal friends of mine. Julio and Mark don't mean nothing to me as football players."

Anderson said he used to talk to the players ''non-stop" but was told to stop communicating with them. He wouldn't say who told him that, but did say that he has spoken to an Alabama official about the situation and has not spoken to anyone from the NCAA.

Anderson asked and answered a natural question about his friendship with Jones and Ingram.

''How can a 19- or 20-year-old black person care about a 55-year-old white person so much?" he said. ''Did the Bible say there was black and white?

''I haven't seen that. The Bible says we're all created equal."

Wait a minute.  Where's the part about the girls?  This whole time, I've been thinking that Julio and Mark went on a fishing trip with some Auburn ladies.  Turns out it was nothing more than crippled old white guy?

Damn the skreets.

This is one of those issues, where it could be nothing.....or it could get really ugly, if something is uncovered.  Something like, how did he become "friends" with Mark Ingram?  Ingram's from Michigan, and the fact that he stated that he wasn't going to talk about how they met, that could be something...could be nothing, who knows.  What I do know, is that I wouldn't want the NCAA snooping around, while I'm trying to get my team prepared for the upcoming season....or have the question in the back of my mind about playing my best player or not, could he be ineligible?

I really don't see it being an issue. The guy is in no way connected to UA. But hey, I'm sure the REC is paying him to say that or some stupid shit. Now had the guy been, at the very least, a season ticket holder, we would be fucked I think. But apparently the rumors that he is part of the AU fanbase may be true, according to the part of the story that says his family members are fans of "another SEC school". Interesting that his company's name is "EAGLE Wholesale Supply", isn't it? If I were you, as an AU fan, I would worry about this more than an Alabama fan.

He is from an Auburn family, but Curtis is a fan of the houndstooth.  Would that be considered a booster?  I know that may sound weird, that being a fan of a team could be considered a booster of said team, but the NCAA has rules on what it means to be a booster, and if I remember correctly, any fan could be considered a booster or supporter....There's something in the wording, of their definition, of a booster.

And you know so how? After he flat out said he is not an Alabama fan, or otherwise connected to UA. Please explain how you absolutely KNOW he is an Alabama booster. Or is this sort of how you know the car dealership owner is a huge Bama booster? Because you say so, and other AU fans say so? I bet the REC paid him to say he wasn't an Alabama fan. Yeah, thats it. The only thing fishy about this story (no pun intended), is this:
Quote
Anderson asked and answered a natural question about his friendship with Jones and Ingram.

''How can a 19- or 20-year-old black person care about a 55-year-old white person so much?" he said. ''Did the Bible say there was black and white?

''I haven't seen that. The Bible says we're all created equal."

That's a classic "doth protest too much" example. And what kind of answer (to is own question) is that anyway?

It is a touch weird, especially since he is deliberately avoiding discussing how he knows them.

This took place at Zeke's Landing in Orange Beach. Julio worked there while he was in school, and thats how the guy knew Julio. This incident didn't even happen while Julio was being recruited or anything. Ingram was down with Julio and they were at Zeke's hanging out and eating and Wolf Bay Lodge. They were down on the docks talking with some folks, Julio recognized Mr. Anderson, knew he needed assistance, they helped him on the boat, he said "Lets go fishing." I got my story from somebody who works at Zeke's who is also an AU fan that books alot of the charter trips out of there. I don't see why she would have a reason to lie to me. Please, please, please ask me what SEC team's ballcap he had on. P l e a seeeeeee......

Prowler? Chizad? Anybody?

I don't know, nor do I give a fuck.

Based on what is known, I don't see anything wrong with it. I do, though, think something is weird with their relationship. Especially the fact that he is deliberately dodging how they know each other. If Julio worked with him at this Zeke's place, then why not say so?

As bad as you want me to put a tinfoil hat on, I'm not. Like I said, this is the only part of the story that is strange to me.

He said he wasn't a bama booster.  I think that's open to interpretation.  What he probably meant to say was that he wasn't a bama booster unless by boosting you meant jerking off to Bear Bryant videos, giving his disability check to the nick saban "friends of players" scholarship fund, wearing crimpson underoos and taking his turn in the Julio cock-licking line.

You know when people say something, particularly when they say it directly, only two people in the world can divine what they ACTUALLY mean:  Chopper and Prowler.

'Oxycotton' the New Street Drug of Choice for Many
By Peggy Peck
WebMD Health News

Feb. 9, 2001 -- The official name is OxyContin, but on the street it's known as "oxycotton." And at a dollar a milligram, it's the drug du jour from the coal-mining country of Kentucky to the bleak factory towns of rural Maine.

When taken in pill form, as intended, OxyContin is a slow-release narcotic prescribed for pain caused by cancer, severe arthritis, sickle cell disease, and nerve damage. The active ingredient in the drug is a morphine derivative, the same as that also found in Percodan.

But when bought on the street, oxycotton is crushed and snorted to deliver a powerful and fast high that many users say is better than heroin.

Show me were he flat out said that he's not a bammer fan.  Show me were "I" stated that he's a bammer booster.  I said that he's a bammer fan and that by NCAA laws fans, can be considered as a booster, because of the wording that they use.  He's not a fan of SPuat like you and most of the other bammers are, or like we're fans of Auburn...meaning that, he doesn't really care about bammer football.  I also know that he owns a Condo and that, word on the skreets is, Julio's mother manages it....which if true, is very interesting in itself.

Yeah, as an Alabama fan, I wear an Auburn hat all the time. Just sayin........Its the cool thing to do nowadays. I saw Kaos sporting a houndstooth Alabama cap the other day.......

Hey, anybody care to know who Mr. Anderson is related to that works for the Baldwin County Board of Education? Wanna take a stab at who the relative's favorite SEC team is? Care to guess which team this relative's grandson was hoping for an offer from this past year? Care to guess what high school team the grandson played on? Come on Prowler, this is fun! Listen shit head, I know how to spell Oxycontin.  I also know that Oxycontin is spelled Oxycotton on the skreets.  I didn't have any trouble Googling WebMD to prove that it's spelled Oxycotton on the skreets.

Also, like I stated earlier, Curtis Anderson isn't a fan of his favorite University like you or I are.  I don't care who Curtis is related to, again, like I stated earlier, Curtis' family members are Auburn fans, some are Big Auburn fans, but Curtis isn't.

Why would the guy wear an Auburn hat around if he wasn't an Auburn fan? I guess just peer pressure. Kaos is hiding his houndstooth cap as we speak.

You're not going to hear alot from the guy about alot of things mainly to protect his relative and not get him in trouble with the BCBE. Again, I'm not worried about this situation. AU fans have more reason than us to be worried about it. But as for your earlier allegation that Anderson is a "fan of the houndstooth", you're wrong on that.

According to some message boards, word is out that the NCAA has finished reviewing the investigation and there will be no suspensions. UA did send somebody up there at the beginning of the week, so hopefully this is accurate. Supposedly, it is supposed to be public soon. We'll see.

Fuck me running.  It's pathetic how much you've got to shell out in order to make sure you're all kosher with the shit for brains NCAA.  Guys take a fishing trip.  Said fishing trip becomes public.  Just look into it and if there's no violation, report your findings (via fax) and close the books.  Nope, for hear of the almighty NCAA retribution, you have to run an in depth 4 month investigation and fly to fucking Indianapolis to meet with the exalted ones and beg for mercy.
Fucking lawyers

Yeah, I'm with you. However, we don't have the best record with the NCAA, so maybe they felt it best to send somebody up there. I don't know. Still, you would think all of this would be pretty clean, cut, and dried when the guy who they went fishing with has put two kids through college at Auburn, and whose family are AU fans. Not saying anything bad towards AU, but the guy is obviously not an Alabama booster or anything. Unless you're Prowler, and then the guy puts up $1 million a year to the REC or some shit.

I've yet to see any proof of this beyond message board bullshit.  I've also seen two or three different versions:

1) Somebody once saw him in an Auburn hat
2) His son played against Julio and goes to Auburn now (which bullshits the "I didn't know he played football line)
3) His white daughter dated Julio and goes to Auburn now. Julio is one ugly motherfucker, even to black women.
4) One of his daughters went to Alabama the other to Auburn.

I don't give a fuck about the gimpy bastard, actually.  Just quit spinning all the asinine stories.

Show me a credible source that will confirm this and I'll accept it.

I think the guy is a UGA fan. He lives in Georgia and has an house on the beach as well. If I can find that story I will post it.

He has a house in Athens, AL and owns a business there. He owns a unit in Island Royale in Gulf Shores as well.
