Auburn's Chizik ready to get down to work

Gene Chizik has chosen his words carefully ever since coming out of left field back in December to be named Auburn's coach.
He's done very little to draw attention to himself, isn't particularly chatty with the media and can come across as boring in group settings.
Maybe he likes it that way, or maybe he knows (rightfully so) that it's not what he says that's going to make him a hit on the Plains.
It's what he does -- and that starts in earnest Wednesday night when the Tigers open preseason practice.
"We've been waiting eight months to get started. Today is a great day," Chizik said. "We're fired up."
He also feels good about the headway he and his staff have made in terms of establishing the right kind of relationships with the players, but he's also realistic.
The true test is still to come.
"They've bought in," Chizik said of the players. "The relationships have gotten a lot stronger. But it's an eight-month bond, not a four-year bond. It's hard to do in eight months. I think we're ahead of the curve at this point with getting to know our players and them getting to know us."
One of the more noticeable changes Chizik is making revolves around practice. Most of Auburn's preseason practices will be at night and held at the athletic complex fields and not the intramural fields.
Depth is a real concern for Chizik, and he's going to do everything he can to make sure the Tigers have all of their players available come Sept. 5. Therefore, practicing a lot in the heat is not high on his to-do list.
Moreover, the Tigers have to play 11 straight weeks before they get a bye this season. The last thing they can afford to do is get a lot of guys beat up and worn down in the preseason.
Chizik hopes to know by the end of this week the status of some of his freshman signees. Four are still trying to make it through the NCAA Clearinghouse -- safety Daren Bates, defensive lineman Terrance Coleman, defensive lineman Josh Jackson and cornerback Taikwon Paige.
Offensive tackle Aubrey Phillips, who transferred from Florida State, will practice with the Tigers. But to play this season, he has to be granted a waiver by the NCAA, and that decision has yet to be handed down.
Speaking of offensive tackles, junior Lee Ziemba said he's gained 35 pounds since December. He played around 275 or 280 last season, but is now up to 312.

Last year, I went to a Saturday scrimmage they had the week before the season opener. It was obvious they were dead. There was very little life and players were just walking around slowly and doing a lot of standing around. Quite possibly the most boring practice I've ever been to. No question the approach is different. Tuberville's philosophy seemed to be a war of attrition. We're going to bust your fucking asses in the heat until you drop and whoever is standing at the end will play. Chizik seems to have a different approach, and with the lack of depth at some positions, that may be wise.
I have no idea which approach is better and I'm not dogging CTT or pimping Chiz. Some corches are old school and others have different ideas. But, don't think for a second these players aren't getting their collective asses busted by this staff. My brother in law was the corches clinic this spring and said he can tell you first hand that reports of Antonio Coleman walking off the field, are for real. He said Rocker had them running this killer drill over and over and over and CTR was all up in their grills. Finally, after AC had run it for about the 6th straight time, he told Rocker where to stick his drill and practice and all this shit...and walked off.
He walked back on obviously, but my brother in law said Rocker was killing the D-linemen.

I think it's a smart move to practice at night, as long as the team is well conditioned I think it's a great move. I'm so ready for football season!

Is that the same brother-in-law that did the fly-over? Because you forgot to mention that if it is.
-
In 95' Coach Rock would have the d-line at Uwa running sprints before and after practice. He will make you a player or he will run you off.

Nope. This is a local schmo, my wife's brother. He used to be the head Corch at Wicksburg and then moved over to Daleville and now he's at Rehobeth.
I live vicariously through their exploits. Now, shush or no BBQ for you.

I need Bbq West Virginia weekend!

Yup and Heaven help you if you have a very slow, but extremely strong, defensive tackle on your team...because, you'll be running 100s until after the Chow Hall closes.

Back to the titelsit of this thread?
Don't you think Chizik ass should have BEEN working? Why is he waiting now to start? Can we get a refund of some portion of his salary since he has been sitting around doing nothing since December?

I think CTT and staff could have used a little of that before last year. Although, I don't think Franklin and Nall should have done the jet ski thing.
Two went out...only one came in.

Did the Jetski make it?
Tony was seen traveling across the line to GA with lots of ones. Not sure what to make of it.

Tony's not the Cheetah type. He definitely made it rain on Victory Drive in Columbus.

Side bar.....Have any of you been on Victory Drive lately?
No pawn shops, no titty bars. WTH is this world coming to when those to business are driven out when there is a military base close by?

I haven't been there in a few years. When I was at Auburn, there were a couple of pretty decent ones. It was about 10 years after I graduated before I went back and they were god-awful, raunchy joints.
So, now they've cleaned em' all out?

Somewhat. I lived in Columbus a lot of my life. Victory Drive was always nice to visit for some good sleazy entertainment, but if you live there, it sucked royal ass. Hookers, drugs, murders, rapes, shootings at the aforementioned fine establishments - you name it. I think the city has tried to clean up the road at least halfway decently. There are a few places left that aren't G Rated, but for the most part they are gone. However, there are some on the mid/northern side of Columbus. Might as well go to Atl though fellas - only tops exposed in Columbus, and even those have pasties. Yeah, might as well be viewing a Vicky's spring catalog.

What is the problem again? I forgot.
