OL Evan Cardwell not expected back with Alabama's football team
Posted by Gentry Estes

July 03, 2009 6:00 AM

TUSCALOOSA -- Alabama senior center Evan Cardwell is not expected back with the Crimson Tide's football team this season, the Press-Register has learned.

Cardwell has dealt with a recurring back injury during much of his collegiate career, though it's not clear if he will go on medical scholarship. He has already obtained his undergraduate degree from UA and is currently enrolled in graduate school with a sports management specialty.

A product of Brooks High School in Killen, Cardwell played in 26 career games for Alabama. That included seven starts at center when injuries and suspensions hit the offensive line during the latter half of the 2007 season.

Cardwell won't be the only departure as Alabama seeks to hit a target number of 85 scholarships in the fall. Senior linebacker Prince Hall transferred to Central Washington. Sophomore linebacker Jennings Hester is taking a medical scholarship for "chronic hamstring problems," according to his high school coach.

The Crimson Tide is likely to announce more attrition before fall camp starts in early August. Alabama coach Nick Saban has not confirmed the departure of Cardwell, Hester or any other players not expected back in 2009.

Should I worry about attrition?  If so, are you guys worried?

LB Charlie "signed to try to get Tim Tebow" Kirschman won't be returning for the taghd.  Also, K Leigh Tiffin is rumored to have his scholarship taken away, but he'll still be on the team...only without a scholarship.  So, that put the taghd at 71 scholarship players on the team with a little more than 20 coming in....that means around 6 more players that'll be taken off of their scholarship, watch out Seniors

Perry, since attrition is apparently new to you and it appears that the only time you've observed it was at Alabama, why don't you check out Ole Miss.  There should be some interesting number crunching going on there this offseason.

When you're done you could look at your own program.  If you're still interested in attrition when you're through with that you could look at every other football program in the entire country.  You might become educated and find that attrition in every program is both inevitable and a necessity.

Tyrone King and P.J. Fitzgerald were also walk-ons awarded scholarships last year.  Both will be back to non-scholarship status and still on the team this fall.

If you believe the message boards, he may be the next to go. That would bring us down to 69 on scholarship.

Six more to go.  Ya'lls arresting season is coming up in about 3 weeks, so that number will be reached rather quickly.

In his freshman year? Seems a little odd for grades to be an issue that early, but okay. I think he was in reality considering a transfer, especially after the quote from his mother in the MPR story:

Quote
"I had to get him to realize, 'You just got here,'" she said.

That tells me that he was considering leaving and she talked him down from it.

Add Ivan Matchett...medical scholarship

Oh and, word on the skreets is that Tyler Love and Barrett Jones (remember him?  BJ was the best Center in the Country, in High School, that never took a snap at Center, in High School and was being recruited as a Guard by SPuat) will be going on a medical redshirt.

Tyler Love had a fucking stress fracture for crying out loud. As a lineman, thats a pretty difficult thing to just bounce back from. I can't even remember what the deal was with Jones. I'm thinking he had a shoulder problem or stress fracture as well.

He was expected to see playing time as either a cornerback or safety for the Crimson Tide this season, but Saban said this week that Lawrence was one of four players who violated a team rule and were not invited back to the team.

“That’s something that isn’t true, but I’m not going to say anything about that,” Lawrence said.

Hmmm, I wonder what that means.......

Oh come on, Prowler.  You know he's just throwing a fit because he got caught breaking the rules.  Bama doesn't need his kind around anyway.  Better off without him.   :taunt:

I'm thinking maybe it means he didn't break any rules, but doesn't really want to talk about why he isn't with Alabama anymore.

I'm not sure though.  That comment was extremely complex and could present a plethora of thought provoking responses.

Yeah but, he was singled out, along with the other three, to the media as being somewhat of a trouble maker.

Yeah but, he was singled out, along with the other three, to the media as being somewhat of a trouble maker.

Then he should explore his options from a legal standpoint.

Lawrence was a four star prospect, rated as one of the top cornerback prospects a few years ago.  He did a great job against Julio Jones in the Alabama/Mississippi All-Star game and was considered a huge pickup when he signed with Alabama.

I've seen the comments about Saban cutting the Shula players to make room for his "studs".  Lawrence wasn't a Shula recruit, he was a top recruit for Saban, so I doubt he was cut just because we needed room.  Especially considering that Travis Sikes is still on scholarship.  The only thing I know about him leaving is that Saban said he violated team rules.

Lawrence says he didn't.  Something obviously took place for him not to be invited back.  If that's not the case, then he should either hire a lawyer or just come out and say what really happened.

Anyone can say, "that's BS, but I don't want to talk about it".  I mean, IF he did violate team rules that would cause him to lose his scholarship at Alabama,  is he really going to tell a reporter what he did, so they can put it in print?

Look, let me go ahead and get this out in the open.  I NEED TO GET LAID!!!

Now, as far as the comment goes, it sounds like whatever happened, Saban thinks the kid did it and it's worthy of kicking him to the curb.  Lawrence apparently disputes that it happened or that he was involved but saw the writing on the wall and transferred.  Why fight it if the corch don't want you?  He moved on.

So, rws, who do y'all have in mind for who's going to be kicked in the teeth next year?  Y'all are already over the limit of 85 for next year, by five, even if no one else commits and y'all sign the ones that've committed.

I think its a little premature to try to guess if somebody might be gone next season, when this season hasn't even started. We lose a shitload of seniors after this season. I'm sure 2-4 guys from the 2010 class probably won't qualify.

But, y'all only lose 15-17 Scholarship Seniors (I say 17 because I'm not sure if P.J. Fitzgerald or Baron Huber is on a scholarship or not)...You can probably add Rolo, because he'll be a First Round selection.  I know I'm getting a little ahead of myself, seeing as how this football season hasn't even kicked off, but as soon as the magazines hit the shelves, I start looking at how many players are going to be gone after this year.

I think McClain will be gone after this season as well. If he did stay for his SR season though, that would be huge. However, I don't think its going to sting all that bad when he leaves. He will be missed for sure, but we have some good talent in the middle. Huber is on scholarship, and Fitzgerald is not.
