Trial of John Katopodis: Records show computer charity funds transferred to cover car cost
Posted by Robert Gordon -- Birmingham News June 25, 2009 3:40 PM

Navy Lt. John Pohnel gave testimony this afternoon involving Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford and payment for a car through Computer Help for Kids.

Pohnel said he was about to enter flight school and needed to sell his 1965 Corvair in the summer of 2003. He said he told Katopodis of his intent to sell the car.
"In typical fashion, John wanted to help and he said he would find a buyer for the car," Pohnel said. Katopodis told him that Langford would buy the car for $4,000.

Katopodis is on trial in Birmingham federal court on mail and wire fraud charges. He is accused of using the charity's money to take exotic trips and buy gifts for friends.

The plan, Pohnel said, was for him to drive the car from Pensacola, Fla., to Birmingham, turn the car over to Katopodis and Katopodis would sell the car to Langford. Pohnel said he got a guitar from Langford instead. He said he had the guitar appraised and found that it was worth $350.

"I called John and told him I wanted my money," he said.

Pohnel said he did later receive the $4,000.

Bank records show that $4,000 was transferred into Pohnel's account from the Computer Help for Kids.

I see no political party affiliations mentioned.  I take it the mayor is a Democrat?

That descriptor usually works for any politician; especially lately.

Especially here in Birmingham.

Even the sweet lil' old gramma...Bettye Fine Collins has been mixed up in the back room dealings with Langford and Katapodis.  When all this is over, we will make the DC local gubmint look like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Yeah, but it will have to pay an occupational tax.

Damn, this place is hilarious. New Orleans can't hold a candle to Birminghamistan. They pay the owner of City Stages $250,000 one week to keep it going & what happens? The owner announces it the next week it is closing. A quarter of a million right down the shitter.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit to see everyone holding an elected position here indicted on a federal racketeering charge.

He might be a crook, but atleast Langford has is trying to make Birmingham a better place to live, instead of watching it die like previous mayors have.  Thats the reason Montgomery sucks so bad because Emory Folmar never did anything he just let the city die and didn't try to bring any entertainment or anything of cultural value to the city.  Now its starting to turn around in Montgomery a small bit thanks to what Bright did.  Pesonally in Birmingham I would love to see a Dome, an Aquarium, and anything else that would make this place better

Wow. Just wow.  Montgomery was a pretty nice place to live when Emory had the reigns. Balanced budget, low crime rate, public works on solid footing.   Now?  Not so much.  Bobby Bright is a tool of the first order who is going right down the road Arrington started in Birmingham and Maynard Jackson did here in Atlanta. Backroom under the table dealings are the order of the day and the day is long.

Somewhere along the lines everyone got convinced that unless they had a dome and an aquarium they were a nothing city.  A city has to have not only the interest but also the population/tax base to support those EXTRA items.  I would dare say that Atlanta has a better chance of making a dome or aquarium work and the aquarium here is almost bankrupt now.  You think it will work better in Montgomery or the Magic city?  The only thing magic left about Birmingham is how quickly they can pull the David Copperfield on a stack of hundreds.

You do realize those things have to be paid for right?

Sure living in an 8 bedroom house with 70'' plasma's in every room would make my house a nicer place to live but guess what? I don't have the money for that. Neither does Birmingham.

Birmingham's gonna have it, because they are taxing the shit out of anyone working in their fair city.  If that doesn't work, Langford can just give Blount, Katapodis or Scruschy some big fat contract so he can make some money on the side and let them get the domr in place.

Don't forget about "May-nard's" successor, Bill Campbell, convicted on Tax Evasion charges; charged, but eventually acquitted on racketeering, bribery, and wire fraud.  Sleazy doesn't begin to describe him.

So what you're asking is "Are Politicians Born as Crooks, Liars, Thieves, and Cheats; OR Do They Choose To Be That Way?"

Sounds like the start of a good topic to me.

I like one of the comments made on AL.com:

"Start the Trial NOW!"

*Edit*

I also liked:

"Kill it...Kill it with Fire"

*Edit 2*

I laughed at these also:

"A dome in Birmingham is like a 1992 Chevrolet Impala with 40,000 dollar
rims! Typical."

and

"Do me Now"? Oh, "Dome Now"!

*Edit 3*
This one made me laugh too...AND works for Atlanta too:

"Does this mean the Interstate lights might get turned on to help people find the Dome?"

In reagard to this entire thread.  It seems to me that you guys just don't like black mayors.  Not throwing stones because I agree.  I challenge you to show me a single instance of effective black leadership at the city, county, state or federal level.  And after you finish that futile exercise, consider what's up at the Brown House today.

Yep.  It's also true.

You can hide a multitude of truths by painting them with the broad brush of bigotry.

Truth?  I live in a middle-upper class neighborhood in Daphne.  Almost every morning I ride my bike around the neighborhood.  There is one black family in this neighborhood.

One house in the entire neighborhood has dead shrubbery.  Guess which one.

One house in the entire neighborhood has weeds two and three feet tall growing up through the landscaping rocks around the front entry.  Guess which one.

One house in this entire neighborhood has a car pulled off in the grass that does not run and has grass and weeds as high as the tires.  Guess which one.

One house in this entire neighborhood has sheets tacked to the windows as curtains. Guess which one.

One house in this entire neighborhood has a back deck with the railing broken and lying off to the side -- weeds sprouting through it.  Guess which one.

This morning one house in this entire neighborhood had a dozen or more cars parked all in the front yard. Guess which one.

This morning one house in this entire neighborhood had two grills going in the front driveway. Guess which one.

This morning one house in this entire neighborhood had a ton of people sitting around on the lawn in fold-up chairs, drinking beer and fanning themselves with paper fans.

This morning one house in this entire neighborhood had a stereo pulled up to the window playing Michael Jackson loud enough for half the block to hear.  Guess which one.

Is it racist if it's true?

Side note. We have a community basketball court.  Two months after this family moved in, the rims were broken.  Coincidence?  Racism?

It's racism if you think the reason that ONE black family lives that way is because they have black skin.

I promise you'll find just as much trash like that in homes that have white families.

In fact, I participated in some of the events in your list when I lived in a lower class neighborhood in New Orleans.

One house had six families sitting around long tables with table cloths made of newspaper.  Guess which one?

One house had six families eating crawfish and sucking the heads while tossing the shells into trash cans.  Guess which one?

The white family.  I guess we were all trash because we were white?

I understand that some cultural differences exist, but to say one race is incapable of living up to your standards because they have a different skin color is simply ignorant and racist.

:sarcasm:
Maybe you need to listen to the words of Jacko, and start looking at the man in the mirror.  Maybe it is better to use a white sheet as a window treatment instead of wearing it on your night ride of terror and racism (Pee Wee's Bigot Adventure?).
Of course, the bent basketball rims is no coincidence, because every one knows that none of your white neighbors could jump that high.
(Now let's see what happens when the first mexicans show up at his neighborhood pool)

Don't be ridiculous.  Don't be naive, either.

People of different racies behave differently.

Would it help you to know that the homeowner's association is assessing the guy the cost of the rims because his kids DID tear them down?

You said you participated in such when you lived in a "lower class neighborhood."  Simple question. Would you expect to see the same if you went to a neighborhood where the homes cost between 300 and 500k?

I've done family reunions where we grilled out and parked around the church cemetery on lawn chairs.  I'm not denigrating the people for having a reunion. Other families in this neighborhood are having family get togethers.  But they don't have cars parked all over the lawn and they're not sprawled out in the front yard. They're doing it in the back yard.

I've been in a lot of places and seen a lot of things.  Black people DO live differently than whites. There are exceptions, as there are to every rule. But for the most part? The differences are there.

The guy in question had a couple of years in the NBA. He's not working now so far as I can tell. He's got time to cut the fucking grass. to pick up the broken railing. To pull the fucking weeds out from in front of his house.  And if he's too fucking busy, his kids aren't doing shit this summer.

One of the reasons you buy a house in a neighborhood is for the amenities. You don't buy into a decent neighborhood so your next door (and he doesn't live next to me or even near me) neighbor isn't allowed to have cars up on blocks or to paint his house purple and pink.

If that makes me a racist or a snob or whatever, so fucking be it.

You should have gone Graymont on them - go out there waving a white towel at the incoming cars, and charged them ten bucks to park in someone else's (not your) yard.  (Now why did Pat Dye have to go and pull games out of Legion Field?)

Short time in NBA, Mobile area - your neighbor isn't that Caffey guy from UAT is it?  Take it easy on him - he got hit hard with some paternity suits from baby mommas a while back and may be low on dough.  (Even if it's not that particular guy, he probably still has child support - goes with the whole NBA thing, they should just roll it into their next collective bargaining agreement)

People of different races do act differently based on their cultural differences.  If you and your wife adopted a black baby, he/she would grow up acting exactly like a person raised in a white family.  His personality would reflect the culture you provided.  If that baby grew up to live in a nice neighborhood, he/she would act just like you.

You asked for someone to find an example of effective black leadership at any level of government.  I sarcastically and hopefully humorously responded with the black kid "racist" gif.  You then went on a tirade about a family not conforming to the normal behavior expected in an upper class neighborhood.  You then attributed it to the fact that they were black.  Expecting a family to fit into your standard is snobbish.  Nothing wrong with that.  Bringing up the fact that they're black is racist.

You say you've seen a lot of things.  How much time have you spent with black people outside of the Southeast?  You might not be a racist, but you're definitely coming off as ethnocentric.

I've seen enough black kids raised by white families to know this isn't necessarily true. It's a nice, utopian thought but not factual.

You've yet to provide an example of effective black leadership at any level.  Good luck with that.  Maybe in another 50 or 60 years you can come up with an answer.  There might be one by then.

The family in question is exhibiting behavior typically attributed to blacks.  The fact that they are BLACK acting like BLACKS shoulc clearly be attributed to something else other than their blackness. It goes well beyond culture. to pretend differently is crazy.

What's racist is to pretend that everybody's the fucking same. It's just not true. It never has been and it never will be.  Trying to force it is ridiculous.

No. It's not Caffey. He's in jail I think.

I don't know the guy's name.  I don't think he played, he was just a sub.  That's what the head of the homeowner's association told me anyway.

Never heard of that guy.

Just as a follow up?  Guess which house had music blaring so loud at night it could be heard half a mile away?  Guess who refused to turn that music down when asked repeatedly by neighbors?  Guess which house had songs blasting out all over the neighborhood with lyrics that included repeated use of the words "niggas, motherfucker, fucking" and other assorted profanities.  Guess who started screaming "racist crackers" when asked to show some consideration?

Guess whose kids were tearing up the children's park with baseball bats and threatened a lady who asked them to stop?  Guess who had to have the sheriff's department called to get them to cease?  And guess who started screaming "racism" because the kids were told to stop tearing shit up?

If you guessed the white families or the Asian families try again.

He was a lieutenant governor.  All the power of a pet rock.  Lt. Governors are not leaders.

Let's just imagine for a half second that he actually was and you found one.  I'll counter with the following:

Richard Arrington
Larry Langford
Andrew Young
Marion Barry
Maynard Jackson
Coleman Young

He was a lieutenant governor.  All the power of a pet rock.  Lt. Governors are not leaders.

Let's just imagine for a half second that he actually was and you found one.  I'll counter with the following:

Richard Arrington
Larry Langford
Andrew Young
Marion Barry
Maynard Jackson
Coleman Young
Tom Bradley
David Dinkins
Chocolate Ray...

Should I go on?

You get no argument from me I stand by my original statement of "best I can come up with".

BTW you left this philistine off of your list.....

I don't know the guy's name.  I don't think he played, he was just a sub.  That's what the head of the homeowner's association told me anyway.

CONSPIRACY!!! You white devil.

CONSPIRACY!!! You white devil.

I am a racist cracker.  Because I find it offensive to have music turned up so loud you can hear it a half-mile away.
