Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn was in Mobile on Thursday to speak at the Wade Office Equipment L'Arche Football Preview. If new Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn wasn't sure what coaching football in this state would be like, he got an idea pretty quick at the 15th annual Wade Office Equipment L'Arche Football Preview on Thursday in Mobile.
"A year ago, we were all here for this event and in that chair, right there, sat Tony Franklin," Press-Register columnist and talk-show host Paul Finebaum joked from the podium, gesturing down the dais toward Malzahn. "He didn't even get out of October. I know everybody's goal is to win a national championship. Your goal ought to be to make it to Halloween."
Malzahn assured the sell-out crowd of more than 700, however, that Auburn's offense and its coaching staff this year are far different than the 2008 version.
"I get asked this all the time, but we are all on the same page, I promise you," he said with a smile. "There must have been some kind of issue last year."
Malzahn was joined on the dais Thursday by Alabama defensive coordinator, former Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage, South Alabama head coach Joey Jones, ESPN.com senior writer Ivan Maisel, Finebaum and Press-Register sports editor Randy Kennedy.
Malzahn assured the crowd that despite his offense's wide-open nature, Auburn will run the football this fall.
"We actually last year at Tulsa ran the football more than anybody in the country but Air Force and Navy," Malzahn said of his teams at Tulsa. "That tells you that we're committed to running the football. In this league, you have to run the football."
With that said, however, he also acknowledged that the Tigers will throw it a lot, too.The key is tempo.
"We do concentrate on trying to throw the football vertically down the field," Malzahn said. "We are a no-huddle team. Our goal is to snap the ball within five seconds after the referee puts it down. If we do that, and we get first downs, we'll average 10 to 15 more plays than our opponents.
"Really it's about numbers. We're getting more plays than anybody else."
Malzahn added that he believes receivers coach Trooper Taylor will turn the TIgers' receiving corps into a team strength.
He's a great recruiter and a great coach and when you combine those, I'm telling you, he's the best receivers coach in America," Malzahn said of Taylor "I really believe that the days of our receivers being looked at as the weak link are over. ... The best thing about him is, he's got some of the best wide receivers in America interested in Auburn."

What a cock...

I'd heard that PF bashed on Auburn, nearly, the whole time he was at the podium.

Why do people want to act like that though Tuberville and that staff are no more, that the issues they had will infect the new staff? People talking about "It's Tony Franklin all over again".
-
His quotes concerning tempo and running more plays etc. eerily reflect those of Franklin. However, I think the Franklin debacle occurred more because of internal strife and everyone doing their own thing than anything else. Franklin's offense has proven itself over the years but it was apparently a failed attempt from the start at Auburn without all the staff working towards the same goal. Personality issues for Franklin? Stubborn assistants? No leadership from the top? All of the above? Who knows?
I'm just hoping this version will prove to be a success with the staff all on the same page. Time will tell.

If Tuberville and staff were still the coaches, I'd be very worried too. They're not. This being a totally different staff, and hired to run this offense, I'm not worried in the least about another meltdown like last year.

Agreed. I think this year's version/success/failure will depend on finding a QB best suited to run the system and staying relatively injury free. Dissention should not be an issue.

Kaos and greaseybammer to chime in, in 5...4...3...2...

Agree. If they can "make" a QB...just one that can manage the game, make a few throws, and not lose games, we should be in decent shape offensively. I want to think Caudle is that QB, but the continued talk about "open competition" and removing the gray shirt from the Cooper kid leads me to believe that they haven't seen anything in Burns or Caudle to give them confidence.

Haha, you seriously just called somebody a faggot. You really are stuck in middle school.

No , middle schoolers will mostly grow out of it as they begin to mature.
Chowder is too busy cruising the message boards and looking up gay porn to ever grow up....or grow a pair for that matter. After reading his post from when his glorious chizik was hired and comparing them to his postings now I have realised that he aint to bright. He is just the ultimate look at me chest thumper, sunshine pumper.
Its sad when you actually stop and look at it.

Ahem back to the original post, children -
Let Finebum and all his cronies have their laughs. I'll even vouch for Tony Franklin. He may not have had the best leadership qualities and his stubborn personality was an issue, but I still believe his offense can work. It's a good offense. Similar offenses work at numerous schools around the country. Franklin had little to no support from his assistants, and I think Tuberville spent all of 2008 planning his vacation itinerary for 2009.
Malzahn will have success. No, he might not put up 40 points every game, but hell, not even Florida's vaunting offense can do that.

I don't normally disagree with you, but you're off the boat on this one. You must have selective memory or something.

You have to realize that he didn't even run his offense at Auburn last year.
Maybe my opinion is skewed due to the fact that I attended his clinic the January after the Clemson game. He detailed with video references how his offense works against any defense even if the defense has better athletes than his offense.
I mean, honestly, did Auburn's offense last year resemble anything Troy did while he was there? Now as for Tony Franklin's ability to coordinate his offense, that's where he failed. He allowed the BBQ gang to do whatever the fuck they wanted until it was too late.
-
The eminent power ass whippings that Malzahonie is planning to give to his oponents is why everyone is lining up to hire co-offensive coordinators from mid majors.
Yes sir he is the shit.

I don't buy that at all. Not the least little bit of it. I can make up a powerpoint presentation that will convince you penguins can maul the shit out of polar bears. Let's see what happens when we put them in the ring.
When you threw out the term "bbq gang" you lost it.
Franklin failed NOT because he didn't get support but because he was an unorganized bullshit artist.

If I took the time to write out all of the names involved in the "bbq gang," would it have made my post more credible?
If Franklin was the sole problem, how did he have success at Troy?

You can't win the "Chizik will do great at Auburn because he has better players" argument unless you also trash the "Franklin did great at Troy, imagine what he can do at Auburn with better players" argument. Can't have both sides.
Why does the Wing-T work at Maplesville High School? Why does the Notre Dame box work at Central?
Franklin was the sole problem.

No, Franklin was just the preview of the shit yet to come.

Here on the plains the forecast is for a shit storm to hit in about 90 days. After it leaves and a strong coaching front moves in then things will clear up and get considerably better.

No, no he wasn't, and I honestly don't think you truly believe that. We've been round and round on this, and I won't do it again, but Franklin was only part of a much bigger problem. There's nothing wrong with the scheme when it's coached.

I believe he was a big problem. I gave him every opprtunity last year but his play calling was the SUCK! It was horrible. It was worse than horrible. I saw...no shit...2 running plays all year. A sweep to the outside, and a counter to the outside. You can't win big time football games like that. I don't know if his offense was installed or not, but I do know that he was the one calling plays...and that was absolutely HORRIBLE!!!

There's nothing wrong with the WingT or the Notre Dame Box or the Run-n'-Shoot, either.
Yeah. I believe Franklin was the entire problem. He exposed some weaknesses in the coaching staff through his own towering incompetence -- which went FAR, FAR, FAR beyond his "scheme" -- but there wasn't anything that couldn't have been corrected or adjusted on Tuberville's staff to resolve the situation.

And in the end ALL of Tuberville's staff got the adjustment they had worked hard for.
We have a new staff now and I just want to see good, hard-nosed football return to the plains.

While I don't believe that Franklin was the entire problem he was still 90% to blame. I believe even if he had been able to bring in an assistant the same result would have happened. The problem with Franklin was his inabilty to adapt and his complaining about not having the proper players. A good coach adapts (see Urban Meyer when he first got to UF) he changes schemes and makes adjustments to his offense to win with the players he has. He then recruits for the system so that he can install said offense. Franklin was too regimented he had to prove it was his way or the highway, he failed. Where I think the other 10% lies is with Tubs and staff, because they never bought into the system, and for a team to work everyone has to have buy in.

Let's see...the head guy hires you with no intention of letting you run your offense...your offensive staff knows this and works against you or fails to work for you...and you're 90% to blame. That makes a shitload of sense.

Actually not, I believe I wrote "I believe" which makes it my opinion.
Let's see...the head guy hires you with no intention of letting you run your offense...Yea Tubs hired him to not let him run the offense that makes a whole lot of sense. your offensive staff knows this and works against you or fails to work for you...Did I not write that the I believed the other coaches were at fault? I wrote that they didn't have buy in, but again isn't that Franklins responsibility, does he not have to prove to them that he is capable? and you're 90% to blame. That makes a shitload of sense.
My opinion your opinion in the end what fuckin difference does it make, everyone that was involved no longer coaches at Auburn.

Okay, I now have a some super insider information that didn't come from a message board or Paul Finebaum. As I'm sure many of you know, I am one of the more connected individuals on this board. I actually had lunch with Joe Whitt about a year and a half ago. Therefore, anyone who questions my exalted insiderness will be publically flogged at Toomers Corner...while Curtis Luper calls out your name with a bullhorn.
Seriously, this isn't info as much as an observation. I ran into one of Auburn's O-linemen from the past year. He was a walk on from this area and I was trying to pick his brain about the program. Strangely, 90% of what he said came straight off Finebaum and message boards. But I digress. His comment was innocent enough but hit home. He said, "Tommy Tuberville was like a father to me. I love him to death but it was time for him to move on." Basically indicated he was burnt out and shouldn't have been coaching last year.
-
Last thing bottom line... A good offense coordinator makes it work, Tony Franklin did not. Will the offense work in the SEC, Pre-Meyer and Tebow I would have told you no. Now I believe it will, but I still think you have to have the right players.
-
He said, "Tommy Tuberville was like a father to me. I love him to death but it was time for him to move on." Basically indicated he was burnt out and shouldn't have been coaching last year.
I think we all agree on that.
-
"I wrote that the didn't have buy in, but again isn't that Franklins responsibility, does he not have to prove to them that he is capable? Think about how that would work in any other business, and see if you still think that. You're hired by the head guy who then allows the people under you, who are there to assist you and are vital to making the whole system work, but only after you prove you're worthy of their support will they then do their jobs?
In the end what fuckin difference does it make, everyone that was involved no longer coaches at Auburn.
Can't argue with the second part.
-

Meyer and Franklin don't run the same offense. As with any offense, you need the players. But you also need your assistant coaches to coach. "Good offensive coordinators" usually are not handcuffed and are allowed to "do what they do".
-

Yes, but you are talking about a staff that knows nothing about the offense now being installed (by now I mean then Tubs Staff). This also covers your last question, he still would need to come in and show them how to do it and why. If I am working for a company and I work under the same project manager for 7 years and they bring in a new guy and the boss tells me this is the guy and he does everything different than the last guy, he needs to teach me his system or I can't do my job.
-
Tony Franklin was an incompetent stumblebum. He was an idiot and a loser.
No, he didn't fit in. Yes he was a pariah. But NOT because nobody liked him or wouldn't invite him to their tea parties. He didn't fit because he was a fucking BUFFOON. Completely inept. The rest of the staff distanced themselves from him over the summer because they could SEE where his fucked up mental retardation was headed.
Every single one of you who has worked in corporate America has seen "that guy" who gets hired and it's immediately blatantly obvious that he's in over his head and going to drown. You don't want to be around so he can grab on to you and take you down with him and you don't want to be close enough to be pulled down with the suck when he goes under. You don't want to be assigned to his projects and you're not going to follow his lead -- because that tars you too.
Franklin was destined to be fired by July of last year. Not because anybody didn't try, but because he was a complete tool and unable to perform his duties. It was just too late to pull the trigger and the cabal figured they could ride out the year without too much damage. They figured wrong.

I read it on a message board. That seems to pass for absolute proof these days. The fact that I may have written the original post is irrelevant. It was posted and I read it.
In truth, it is about 60% what I think happened based on the 40% I got from people who should know. The immolation was not unexpected to me.

The division started almost immediately. I do know that. They waited to start fucking around with the offense until after the bowl game. What I don't know is who was at fault, but I have my opinions. I've stated them.

So how does discussing yesterdays mistakes help us to survive the fuck-ups on the horizon?
