One of my daughter's friends, 19 years old, was killed in a traffic accident this morning. Beautiful girl, graduated from high school a year ago today.
Makes you wonder.

My daughter gradulates tonight and starts at Auburn this Fall. That kind of stuff just makes me cringe. Was she at Auburn?

No. She was going to a juco school I think. My daughter graduated high school with her.
I don't know what to say to my girl. Or anybody, really. Everything you think of is really platitudes.
Where is your daughter planning to stay? Do freshmen have to stay on campus? Is she sororitized? My daughter needs a fourth at the new Exchange out behind Wal Mart.

I'd tell her what my daddy told me. Son, each year there is the potential that someone you know will not be here anymore. Live your life so that you are ready at any time.

I hate it.
Seat belt? Her fault or someone else's for disobeying a traffic rule? Just wondering, as these are the unfortunate typical reasons it occurs.
I send my condolences.

Yes it is. My heart goes out to your daughter as well as her friends and her friend's family. I just laid one of my best friends I've had since highschool to rest yesterday. He lost his life over the weekend in the same manner although at 25 he got to experience a little more life then your daughter's friend its still too short. Chad loved to fish, be with friends, and just soak up life. He served valiantly in Iraq and leaves behind countless friends, a loving family, and a wife and son who's lives are devestated. This has been the hardest week I've had in my life. Tough to even get out of bed in the morning. Please don't put off telling the people in your life how much you respect them, love them, are thankful for them and grateful for having them in your life. You never know when you'll lose that chance.

Jesus.
Man, I send condolences your way as well. Every now and again, folks need a reminder of what's important in life.

All I know at this time is that it was a head-on collision and she did not die immediately. They fought to keep her going for several hours, but the attempts failed -- or so I was told.

Man...prayers sent to the family and friends.

She'll be on campus in a dorm with a friend she's graduating with. I think they have to stay on campus first year. She'll be "Rushing" and all that.
This scares me for obvious reasons but I also know that even though she hasn't had any wrecks in her almost 3 years of driving, she's horrible behind the wheel. I watched her blow by me one day in traffic and cut some old dude off. Of course she denied it when I ripped her a new one.
She had plenty of room. Oh well, We all go through letting em' go and hoping you've done your job.

Last night a kid that graduated with my step-daughter was wearing an extra sash. I inquired. I was told it belonged to his older brother who was killed graduation night last year. Young people shouldn't die. I'm not smart enough to know what to tell your daughter. Just be there for her is all I can tell you. I'm sorry for the loss of you daughter's friend. I never experienced it at that age, but my brother lost one of his best friends while in high school. It's tough on kids because they don't expect it.

The best thing is to not say too much. Just let her know that you're there for her. If she's at home right now, do something nice for her. She'll open up if she needs to. This isn't the movies...you won't have the perfect quotable line to teach her a valuable lesson.
I hate that. I watched 400 of our seniors walk across the stage last night. I can't imagine any of them not making it past next year. So sad.

Honey, I am so sorry. We lost two classmates to car wrecks my freshman year at Judson, one of them the very first night of school, during freshman orientation. Even at a Christian college, no one had any adequate words to offer. I know I held the memory of that night in my mind for a long time - all we knew was that someone had been killed, but we had to sit and wait until curfew and just see who didn't come back.
Scars like that serve as a caution - maybe the memory of her friend will make your daughter slow down some time, or think before making a risky lane change. In the meantime, just love her - that's all you can do.
Catphish - my condolences to you as well. Again, no adequate words.
