Fire rips through Yuba City homeless camp

YUBA CITY, Calif. -- Officials are investigating a fire that ripped through a homeless camp along the Feather River in Sutter County.

Yuba City firefighters say strong winds helped fan the flames, forcing evacuation of the encampment Sunday night.

Police say 30 to 40 people will be taken to an American Red Cross shelter. Emergency workers say they will distribute blankets, cots and basic necessities.

The National Weather Service reported that gusts reached as high as 40 mph. Fire crews stayed overnight to make sure the fire was out.

It's unclear how the fire started. The city is about 40 miles north of Sacramento.

That's funny. I guess the bums just stood there while some spontaneous combustion took place.!
