In just a short period of time and with a staff that's still not complete, Auburn managed to build a Top 20 recruiting class in 2009.
How will the Tigers fare in 2010 when the new staff has a whole year to work together?
Look out.
"The thing you're going to see out of us -- I don't care who is recruiting him. I don't care if the Dallas Cowboys are recruiting him. If he's got a mama and a family and he's got some values to him, we're going to go after him no matter what state he's in," Auburn assistant coach Trooper Taylor said.
"We're going to take care of the home state. I promise you that. We're going to cover that. All of those coaches are going to be called. We're going to find every kid that we can. But we're also going to venture out too. And we're going to try to get the best players in the country, because I figured out a long time ago, I'm a better coach when I have better players."
Even before the ink was dry on the 28 National Letters of Intent Auburn received last Wednesday, the AU staff was hard at work on the 2010 class gathering and evaluating video, contacting high school coaches, and sending out offers,
Auburn has set its first Junior Day for Mar. 7.
"It's going good," Taylor said. "We've had some calls from top prospects already. Auburn is not a hard place to sell. It's just getting them on campus.
"I tell you what, I don't know if there is a student body more excited."
Taylor said the best way the Auburn students, alumni and fans can positively impact AU's recruiting is by showing up at the A-Day game, which is scheduled for Apr. 18.
Taylor said they are also spending the time between now and the start of spring practice Mar. 24 evaluating their needs for the 2010 class.
"Whatever that need is, we've got to make sure we're fulfilling that need," Taylor said. "I think some schools get in trouble and you'll see them dip off because they'll go and try to get the highest-ranked kid or just the highest-ranked player regardless of position and then you stack them up and you fall short somewhere else. You're only going to have 85 on scholarship and I think that's important.
"I think (head) coach (Gene) Chizik has done a great job of making (Curtis) Luper the recruiting coordinator because he's going to look at all those things. He's going to visit with both coordinators and then he's going to visit with each position coach."
Taylor said the entire staff watches prospect videos together rather then splitting up into offensive and defensive groups.
"I want to know what (defensive coordinator) Ted Roof is looking for when he's looking for a linebacker. What is Tracy (Rocker) looking for when he's looking for a defensive lineman," Taylor said. "At most places, most coaches, the offense watches their players and the defense watches theirs.
"Well, I'm going to recruit a defensive player in my area. I'd better know what (the coach) is looking for. I think those things are important. We have really put our egos in our pocket in being able to do those things."
With two more assistants still left to add to the staff, Taylor said he hasn't been assigned a specific recruiting area yet.
"We've talked about some and here's what we did – and again, it's a credit to Gene -- he let us write down the areas that we feel good about and turn it in," Taylor said. "Not saying that's what you're going to get, but your wishlist, basically and where you have the most ties and connections and the most relationships, basically. We'll put those together based off that and based off whatever we need to get covered."
But whatever areas Taylor and the rest of AU's assistants are assigned won't limit their ability to go out and find players from throughout the country.
"A lot of schools want you to recruit the position you're going to coach or an area that you've been working the whole time. We're not going to do that," Taylor said. "No matter how many people are offering them, so and so might be in his backyard, if he can play and he's got the right character, we're going after him. He's going to have to tell us no more than once."
While AU's new staff is focused on finding great players, Taylor said they won't sacrifice character.
"The first thing Gene talks about right off the bat was the word 'character,'" Taylor said. "We were on a short deal, so he had to trust some of us who had already been dealing with these kids to know the type of character you were getting and could be a part of your family.
"When I say family, I have kids over at my house, they may be playing PlayStation with my son or my wife had the receivers over when I was at Oklahoma State, and in the background, they're singing the 12 Dogs of Christmas. And she's got it on video and they're building gingerbread houses. I don't want somebody over at my house that is going to be around my 12-year-old son and my 10-year-old daughter that's being disrespectful. Or having to clap the whole time he's in there, because if he's not, he's stealing something.
"I don't want that. And Gene's the same way."
-
"If he's not clapping, he's stealing something." <paraphrase>

Mindless shit like that will get you nowhere on this board except a good ass raping of your wife/girlfriend. Which reminds me, you must post pictures of said wife/girlfriend so we can properly evaluate the extent of said ass raping. It's in the rules...in case you didn't read them.

well, the last year of tubs was actually ranked 30 or 31 by rivals when you consider who actually enrolled by fall. They were like btwn 19-22 at the end of recruiting.

So basically like never then. By the time chiztards class hits the field we could conievably be down as far as the lower 30's.
Chowder quit speaking to me till you do someting with that "ode to a queer bammer's wet dream" avatar you have.
Or admit your love of fresh trouser trout.

And you know this how? I mean aside from wishful thinking. What is your angle? I just don't see how an AU fan could be wishing so hard for a coach to fail. It defies logic.

Well I have (through my family) have a personnal "history" with the worthless piece of shit.
Auburn could not have hurt me worse had they sent the drumline up to burn down my house with my collection of Auburn memorabillia in it. But had that happend, fear not .... I would have made my wife go in and retrieve as much as she could
I wish I could go into depth on what the fuckturdsleezeball chizik did but I gave an oath to a very important person who I respect very much to never speak. And if you have seen nothing else of my psyche in these post its that I am very very loyal and keep my word.
I don't want Auburn to fail at anything but I would not piss in cheezedicks ear if his brain was on fire.
I do wish I tell more of this to you, oh how I do wish it.

I wish you could too. It makes it a little more understandable if Chizik did something to you persoanlly. I can not say that I feel as strongly about anyone (with the exception of my ex mother-in-law who I hate more than I ever thought I could hate anyone) as you do about Chiz. Hopefully you can just put it in the back of your mind and let things slide. He is, the coach of the place we are all so passionate about, so letting it eat at you is not going to do anything productive...

So Kaos, what's your excuse?
Do you really want me to repeat it all again?
It starts with Jacobs making Auburn look like Toledo by hiring a coach no other program would have hired to fill the position. He hired a coach who needs time to learn and grow, he didn't hire a coach who has the resume to match up with the quality coaches that now populate the SEC. With this hire, Jay Jacobs said that he considers Auburn to be less than the other programs in the SEC, including Ole Miss and Mississippi State. If Alabama had hired this clown you, Chizad, would STILL be laughing your ass off at their stupidity. You, Chizad, would still be mocking it as the final sign of their apocalyptic decline into irrelevance. And I'm supposed to be happy?
But what the fuck. I've already explained it a thousand times. I've explained why I hate the hire, why I think it was probably the worst hire in the history of college football (no matter how it turns out six or seven years down the road).
Let me draw you a picture.

"And when he made the players spend 20 minutes of the first spring practice of 2007 precisely lining up their helmets, you wondered if a real life Captain Queeg hadn't taken over the ISU football program. "
....
"Even if the players were horrible – say 5-19 horrible – that still means that Chizik and his staff generated a grand total of zero wins with their talent. The players, of course, were not 5-19 horrible, which means the reality is that Chizik and staff cost Iowa State victories as opposed to making them happen. "

From 2007: “Asking for input from our fan base is an important part of the design process,” Head Coach Gene Chizik said. “In a political year, you might compare this to a straw poll.” "Chizik says ISU used gold pants during Brown's tenure and he thought it would be a good change for 2007." He was worried about pants? Should have been doing a little work on his gameplans instead. Who gives a fuck if your team is even wearing pants when they're getting pantsed every Saturday by Kent State and Western Oklahoma Tech.
From 2008's ISU Athlon Preview: "There are several reasons why Iowa State should be improved this season, none bigger than Gene Chizik’s intolerance for losing. Chizik now has had plenty of time to evaluate his team and learn more about running a program. A bowl trip would be a nice surprise considering the schedule turns in the Cyclones’ favor, though year three is more likely for a breakthrough." (Damn, he tolerated the fuck out of it. I guess that two-win, ten-game losing streak was a better "surprise"). http://www.athlonsports.com/si/2008-iowa-state-cyclones-preview
He said virtually the same things at ISU as he has here. Bullshit, bullshit blueprint. Bullshit, bullshit build a recruiting fence. Bullshit, bullshit championships. Talk, talk, talk. When you're 5-19 in your career, how about shutting the fuck up about how you know a motherfucking thing about shit or shinola and just do the best you can at a job you never should have gotten in the first place.

BTW, here's a funny thread from an Iowa State message board from February of 2007 where they're ripping a guy for criticizing the Chizik hire. This is the thing...I agree with you 100%. I really do. But I am not one that holds a grudge. I can't do it in real life and I can't do it here. The fact is, Chiz is the man at Auburn. He has graded out at at least an "A" in his coaching hires and he graded out at an "A" for his recruiting finish. I will support him, and hope he turns out to be a decent hire and ISU is a place that just didn't fit with him. Only time will tell...
-
Hmmm... This seems to go completely away from your previous assertions that you are against the "HIRE", and NOT the "man" himself. You might need to take swat at Greasy again with the newspaper, or squirt him with the water bottle cause he's humping your leg in excitement. You two are like peas and carrots.
Let me see if I can explain this in terms you'll understand. Oh, fuck that, I'll just use English.
Would I hate the hire so much if I thought Chizik was competent or qualified? No. I hate the hire because I have no faith in his ability to manage this job AND because it is my considered opinion that in hiring someone who is not qualified, Jay Jacobs said to the world that Auburn did not consider itself an upper-tier program. I hate the hire because noone has yet been able to convince me that Auburn is better off today than it was on December 1. Is the staff better? You could say yes at two positions, but the rest is a massive unknown. Can you honestly tell me today that AU's running backs coach has the same track record of producing top-quality backs as Eddie Gran?
All that in the bank, though, the question is do I hate Chizik. And the answer is no. If Jay Jacobs was stupid enough to offer me $2M to leave this job and take over the AU football team, I'd do it. Back up. No, I wouldn't. I know I don't have the experience to handle that position and I wouldn't do that to Auburn or to my family. But if Michigan or Colorado or somebody like that did? Yeah, I'd take it. So no blame there.
If I took the job, I'd bust my ass to do it as well as I could. I'd hire the best assistants I could find who would agree to work with and for me. So no blame there.
Still doesn't mean I could do the job.
I hate the hire because I believe Chizik to be unqualified. I am not assuaged by his bumbling rhetoric to this point although his staff -- on paper only -- appears to have potential. His so-called recruting prowess really didn't blow me away like it did some of you, but maybe it will be better next year. The fact that 99.9% of the people who pay attention to college football are in wait and see mode will certainly be used against Chizik by opponents who are far more skilled at recruiting than he or his staff are. I'm curious to see how (or if) they can combat that.
You can spin that into "he hates Chizik" if you want because that gives you an easy way to dismiss whatever valid concerns I might have. As I've said before, it's clearly a tactic you've practiced often in the advance of the homosexual agenda. Anybody who brings up a legitimate point in opposition to the queer mantra is branded a "homophobe" or a "hater." You're just applying what you gay paraders have done for years to this discussion. I say Chizik made stupid and ill-advised comments at a press conference and you shriek "Chizophobe!! He hates Chizik!!!" Typical diversionary tactic.
Last, I don't hope Chiz fails. I'd rather he didn't. It's been a long time since I looked at an Auburn schedule and mentally marked off a loss. That sickens me. It's not where I want to be and it's not where I expect AU to be. Hope he proves me wrong.

Seriously? I don't hold a grudge either. If you knew some of the stuff in my life I've forgiven and forgotten....
But I've dug myself in on this.
Part of it is because of the relentless and often unwarranted sunshine pumping from a couple of folks with basically no legitimate opposition. Part of it is because I have the same feeling about Chiz that I had about Franklin. Part of it is because the same couple of folks who were lobbing smart ass, personal (and bumblingly clumsy) attempts at attacking me on the Franklin issue rather than discussing the position I took are at it again in what's actually become a virtual carbon copy of their "give Franklin a chance" bullshit pandering.
I'm not stupid. I know Auburn is stuck with him for at least three years because Jacobs is an idiot and won't fire him no matter what. But what else do we have to talk about at the moment? I'm loading up the concourse and doing my part there...
If Chiz flounders early, you'll see Jacobs pop his shit-eating head up out of the hole and start yammering about "patience" and how AU's talent level is down and a bunch of other assorted bullshit. Some on here will lap it up like deranged sheep. I won't. I'll remember that AU supposedly had enough talent to win the West in 2008. I'll remember that anybody who was anybody said man for man, AU had better talent than any team in the league but Florida and perhaps LSU. Chizik isn't getting a fucking pass in my book. He walked into a better situation than almost any head coach in college football history. Better than Saban, at least equal to Meyer, as good as Miles, better than Kiffin, better than Nutt, better than Petrino. He fucking better figure it out and figure it out quick. If he wins, all this goes away (except for the inevitable gloating from a few). If he doesn't? I have not yet begun to fight.

I'm not in any way claiming to see the future. It's true that this staff could turn out to be a total bust. But as even you admit ON PAPER, this staff looks to be far more promising than Tuberville's at every end, RB coach included. Luper isn't exactly chopped liver, and I believe Running Back U had more to do with our success at that position than Gran's ability to coach up.
You must admit that a head coach's only real responsibility is hiring the staff that surrounds him. Unsuccessful coaches are so because they fail to hire a great surrounding staff. I was livid when the Chizik hire was made, because I thought a coach with the lack of credentials as you laid it out could not possibly convince quality coaches to join his staff. I was wrong and couldn't be happier about it. With THESE coaches recruiting and coaching the players, I am confident. Head coaches are only on the field when the news cameras are rolling. They are a CEO, a face, and a decider of whether to kick or punt or go for it on 4th down.

Your irrelevant homophobia aside, would you be able to look at this schedule with Tubs and his staff at the helm and mark many W's after last season? I sure couldn't. In fact, all of my optimism for next season is attributed to this coaching staff, which appears to have a fire and a drive long lost by Tuberville and his staff.
