NCAA looks into harsher penalties for rough play, taunting
February 12, 2009

Oregon coach Mike Bellotti wants college football to have tougher penalties against unsportsmanlike conduct and dangerous hits.

Now it's time to find out whether his coaching colleagues agree with his suggestions.

Bellotti, the NCAA football rules committee chairman, said Wednesday officials should eject more players for flagrant personal fouls, and agreed to seek input on whether some celebration penalties should be live-ball penalties, which could result in losing points. :bs:

While the ejections will be a point of emphasis next season, the celebration recommendation is not even a formal proposal yet.

"We're going to poll the coaches and see if they support that (celebration change)," Bellotti said. "They may not."

Bellotti said the change was not likely to take affect for at least two years, and even if approved would likely apply only to players who begin taunting opponents before crossing the goal line. The penalty would be assessed from the spot of the foul, like offensive holding calls in college football.

Toss it to the ref and then head back to the sideline. If you and your teammates celebrate on the way back, then it is emotion and not taunting. Drop the ball and stand around in the end-zone waiting for your teammates, then get a flag.

While I agree that a lot of stuff is over the top, celebration has always been a fun part of the game. The question though still out is loss of points? Should it be considered live ball and thus loss of the points, I think that is extreme.

No points.  The rules are tough enough now.  They've already taken a lot of the celebration and emotion out of the game.  We can sit our drunk asses up in the stands and act like 6 year olds, but the player who keeks the touchdown needs to calmly hand the ball to the ref and jog to his sideline.  No, I don't want to see a whole thug mentality out there, but I don't want teams to act like a Japanese Little League team either.
