At Dem retreat, a partisan love fest

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — A fired-up Barack Obama ditched his TelePrompter to rally House Democrats and rip Republican opponents of his recovery package Thursday night – at one point openly mocking the GOP for failing to follow through on promises of bipartisanship.

In what was the most pointedly partisan speech of his young presidency, Obama rejected Republican arguments that massive spending in the $819 billion stimulus bill that passed the House should be replaced by a new round of massive tax cuts.

“I welcome this debate, but we are not going to get relief by turning back to the same policies that for the last eight years doubled the national debt and threw our economy into a tailspin,” said President Obama – sounding more like Candidate Obama than at any time since he took the oath of office less than a month ago.

Obama, speaking to about 200 House Democrats at their annual retreat at the Kingsmill Resort and Spa, dismissed Republican attacks against the massive spending in the stimulus.

"What do you think a stimulus is?" Obama asked incredulously. "It’s spending — that's the whole point! Seriously.”

So let me get this straight.  They have control of the House and the Senate and it is STILL the GOP's fault that his stupidity doesn't get passed?  Amazing!

No...apparently we're going to get relief by spending even more and quadrupling the national debt that 'threw our economy into a tailspin!'

If the Democrats socialists weren't so fucking dangerous I'd say that I can't take these people seriously anymore!

It only takes a simple understanding of the economy to know that you can't SPEND your way out of an economic slowdown.  This guy's just following the next commandment of his Democrat playbook.  A bailout will only work as a stop-gap measure to keep certain industries afloat.  You need to stimulate consumers, and the only way to accomplish this is to provide/enable/empower consumers with even greater purchasing power.  We call those tax cuts...

Fuck the banks...  Fuck the car companies...  Fuck the government...  Cut most government salaries (aka non-producers) by 50% with the exception of key defensive and infrastructure positions...  Shut down the Smithsonian and other government run garbage (open them up "more" to volunteers and donations)...  Cut government entitlement staff by 50%...  Cut IRS staff by 50%...  Cut the salaries of all elected officials by 50%...  Cut the crap!

We got ourselves into this shit by spending money we don't have. So, how are we going to fix it? By spending money we don't have. Fucking genius.

We see where they are proposing that no company receiving bailout funds pay their CEOs more than $500,000. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for that. I agree with you, why aren't we cutting any pay from the government payroll?

Furlough Fridays begin for Calif. state workers

Feb 6 07:40 AM US/Eastern
By JUDY LIN

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - More than 200,000 state government employees were expected to stay home without pay Friday as California began its first-ever furlough, a move intended to save money during an ongoing fiscal crisis.

State agencies scrambled in the days before the furloughs took effect to avoid confusion for the public, such as people trying to register vehicles or obtain professional licenses.

Among the offices to be closed Friday are those of the Department of Motor Vehicles and Department of Consumer Affairs. The governor's Office of Emergency Services also would be dark as part of a cash-saving move ordered by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Critical and revenue-generating agencies were scheduled to remain open, including fire stations, parks and employment centers that process unemployment insurance claims. California's unemployment rate is 9.3 percent, a 15-year high.

Schwarzenegger ordered the two-day-a-month furloughs, reducing the average state worker's salary by 9.2 percent, as he and lawmakers try to solve the state's $42 billion budget shortfall.

The governor had hoped his order would apply to some 238,000 state employees, but each of the seven other constitutional officers have said they will not comply. Employees of the Legislature are not under his authority.

Schwarzenegger's legal affairs secretary, Andrea Hoch, said the administration was prepared to sue the state controller if he did not reduce paychecks for more than 15,000 workers in the other constitutional offices, which include the attorney general, secretary of state and insurance commissioner.

A judge who affirmed Schwarzenegger's authority to order the furloughs said his ruling did not apply to statewide elected officials because they were not a party to the lawsuit. The administration has maintained that employees of constitutional offices are covered by the furlough order.

Doors to about 180 DMV offices were to be locked Friday. Some people said the state gave little notice to the public about the furloughs, which will continue on the first and third Fridays of each month through June 2010.
...

Well...the time off will give them more time to smoke their legalized, medicinal cannabis.

I'm not for that...  I understand the perception that these company CEOs may have been leading these companies as they fell on hard times, but you can't handicap a company by limiting their top post to a less-than-top player.  Replace them... maybe.  But, don't cut off the company's foot and expect them to still be able to keep up in the business world.

My evidence is only anecdotal through talk-radio hear-say but my understanding that the banks who took TARP money were not taking the money under any kind of conditions or terms that The ONE is now suggesting...especially salary caps...I'm not sure about the Bailout funds offered to the auto manufacturers as to what kind of conditions and terms they had to accept.  The main purpose for TARP money was for stable banks to use to buy up 'troubled assets'...such as other banks.

We need jobs. We need to bring back jobs that have been outsourced. More folks working in the USA= more tax money going into the coffer.

We don't want a lot of those outsourced jobs.  It's why they've been outsourced.  If Pushpop is willing to do a job for half of what Joe Sixpack is willing to work, it would be dumb to bring it back to America.  We'd be paying more for a product or service than it is worth in the world market.  It would devalue our currency.

You want more people working?  Encourage economic growth...  NOT government growth...

Not really. A big majority of those jobs would have stayed here had it not been for the second highest corporate taxes in the world.

My question is with the federal government in a deficit (in other words, losing money) why is noone bitching about them spending my hard earned tax money going on a retreat to the Kingsmill Resort and Spa????

Isn't this what these hypocrites have been bitching about with all of the poorly run companies they are bailing out?

You'd think there would be a sense of moderation in Congress when it comes to this sort-of thing especially with the MSM focusing in on corporate activities of companies participating in bailout funds...but, no, these are a bunch of fucking hypocrites, just as you point out.
