Title: Buying a Car Tomorrow or Monday
Post by: Townhallsavoy on December 20, 2008, 07:34:31 PM
So, I'm going to be buying a car for my wife this week.  It's not a Christmas gift; her car died three days ago.  I need some tips on negotiating the price.  I'm thinking of bring 20 newspaper clippings on the fall of the auto industry and saying, "You need me to buy this car, or all of your dealerships and factories are fucked."

We're going after a Honda Accord preferably used.  What do you guys think I should say?

Call my Brother in Law at King Honda in Auburn he will show you some
Auburn love!

I can just hear this conversation.

"Hello, King Honda."

"Ummmmm, yeah, may I speak to jumbo's brother-in-law?"

"Who?"

"Ummm, jumbo's brother-in-law.  He's supposed to be getting me a deal."

Then, let's say you do get connected to him.

"Yeah, how do you know Jason?"

"Ummm, yeah, we talk about fisting dogs over the internet."

*Silence.*

This has success written all over it.

I live in Birmingham, so I'm probably going to try Tameron Honda first.  If I can't find anything there, I'll definitely give him a call.

Avoid anything made by Honda between 1998-2003 that has an automatic transmission. Seriously.

As someone who used to write and create ads for a newspaper group town, I'd suggest a few tips...

1. If you know someone, utilize it.
2. Don't go and buy on the first trip, it leaves you no room to work with.  Just get information and identify a car you want to buy.
3. Find that car at more than one dealership and get the dealers working against each other as soon as possible.  It could be your best bargaining chip.
4. Make sure you're familiar with all rebates, and make sure they don't represent those rebates as them cutting you a break out of the goodness of their hearts.
5. Start at a number at around 5K less than sticker and make him work to you, not you work towards his number.

If payment is the most important thing, have him work the numbers first before you even look at cars.  It'll be better for you, and the salesman will appreciate not wasting his time on something you're never going to buy anyway.

So....  get the dealers working against each other...POWERFUL tool!  Or establish your number early.  If they quote you something good, get them to do a buyers, or purchase order, then take it to the other dealer... They'll either beat it or meet it.  It works!

I did not understand this sentence nor its relevance to the conversation.

That being said, T gives pretty sound advice.

I have heard that payment isn't a good bargaining tool afa don't let the bastage know what payment you want. Maybe if he gives you his "best" price ask what the payment would be on that and go from there.

Never tell them what monthly payment you will settle for.

I would also have a list of websites where cars are sold by dealers and/or buyers to throw out there afa where you have been shopping. They know they are competing again the web these days as well.

Hell, find the 3 lowest and nice looking accords on the web at the best price you can find and print that shit off and take it in with you.

Car dealers are going to go off of a number in their "black" book, not Kelly's, or any other book you can find online.  If you have gone to the bank, chances are they consulted a yellow NADA book.  That will be close to the "black" book, but not quite.

Nothing wrong with what tiger88 said, except I strongly disagree with the payment information, if that is a concern.  Payments can be worked out over different terms, but you AND your salesman are going to be very frustrated if you go through the selection process and THEN figure out you can't get a payment within reasonable distance from your goal.   You can go all internet on them if you want, but that'll just annoy most car salesfolks, and generally doesn't impress them much.  So, unless you have a witch doctor ready to shrink some heads like on TV, do your own legwork, with people they can see, talk with, and locally compete against..

You'll win in the end.

People in Detroit hate you.

However, having been both a Honda and Toyota owner over the last 15 years, I suggest you scrap your plans and begin looking for a Toyota Camry.  Better quality car overall.

Yeah we're considering Toyota as well.

If Detroit wasn't a cesspool of shitty car companies that are run by mongoloids, I might care.

If Chop was giving me a free car and I had a choice of Honda or Toyota, I'd take the Toyota today and every day.

Try the dealer websites first - check their inventory - find which one you want  - then show up to test drive.

i prefer the sound of 8 cylinders of a Chevy, riding up in the air above your camry's and accords and the sound of gas exhaust going out my dual exhaust.  My Z71 is turning 10 years old and it has been a joy to own.  I've got 155K and have been wondering myself if I should trade in our go for 200.
