Auburn irony: Rhoads replacing Chizik at Iowa State
Posted by Charles Goldberg, Birmingham News December 20, 2008 9:01 AM
Throw in an ironic twist to Auburn's hire of Gene Chizik.
Chizik, who left Iowa State to become Auburn's head coach at week ago today, is being replaced as the Cyclones' head coach by Paul Rhoads, who was Auburn's defensive coordinator this season.
Rhoads is an Iowa native and a former Iowa State assistant coach. He'll be introduced as Iowa State's new coach at a men's basketball game against Jacksonville State in Ames tonight. Rhoads was Auburn's defensive coordinator for one season. He was at Pittsburgh the eight seasons before that.
Rhoads was an Iowa State assistant coach from 1995-99.
"I know how special Ames and ISU were to me during my first tenure and having the chance to return and lead this program reads like a Hollywood script,'' Rhoads said.
Rhoads agreed to a five-year deal worth $5.75 million in guaranteed compensation with incentives to increase that total.
Moving on, here is today's Auburn story in The Birmingham News. We have a new coaching name -- Watson Brown -- but don't go too crazy with it one way or the other. We don't know the level of talk.

Congrats, I guess.

He has been smoking weed lately and it slows him down.

Congrats to Rhodes.

So Ames is now where our DC's go to test out the HCing water? I guess that means Rhoads will be our new HC in a few years.
-
I think ISU got the better of this deal.
-
I don't think ISU got the better deal, at all.

Agreed. There was some speculation amongst AU fans (before Tubs was gone) that Rhoads wouldn't be back next year. He had some great games, but a few of our defensive performances weren't up to par no matter how badly the offense sucked.

Overall, I was incredibly underwhelmed. I don't think it was all Rhoades, but there at the end, the D just flat out gave up. I think it was split evenly between just flat out being worn out and disgust with the ineptitude on offense.
Anyway, he went home. Best of luck to him.

Yeah, yet another Auburn coordinator making it to the HC position. This time with no intermediate steps.
This is good for Auburn, and will probably help us get quality assistants.

I watched that movie yesterda as well.

I didn't think Rhoads was black. I could have sworn I saw pics of him and he was white. I mean, they wouldn't have hired a white guy over...
Oh forget it.

It's okay because I'm pretty sure Charles Barkley has never stepped foot in Ames.

It's a deeper shade of soul.
