Earle Bruce was 36 and 32  in 6 seasons at ISU before heading to Ohio State in 1979. He would leave OSU with a 81-26-1 record. With two Rose Bowl appearances and another tie for the Big 10 Championship.

Bruce was preceded at ISU by Johnnie Majors. Majors went 24-30-1 from 1968 to 1972. With only one winning season. Majors would leave ISU for Pitt. and win the NC four years later in 1976.
