Title: Vegas and Hockey, Eh!
Post by: Snaggletiger on March 13, 2025, 11:11:03 AM
Nothing going on here in the Foosballz Forum, so why not post it here?  Nobody is gonna' read it anyway.

Snagette and I spent last week in Vegas.  We did a lot of fun, more low-key stuff, because we're old and don't care about gettin' all up in the debaucheries and whatnot.  My daughter has been out there about 10 years now, and the main focus of the trip was that her long-time boyfriend proposed to her at the end of her show.  Really a great night.  But anyway....

We also went to a Las Vegas Golden Knights hockey game against the Pittsburgh Penguins at T-Mobile Arena.  My daughter also works for that organization with the Golden Belles, basically a dance team.  Great experience overall.  It's a party outside the arena pre-game, and the fans are serious about their hockey.

As for the game, just a slight bit of a letdown for me.  I think I went into it with some preconceived notions and expectations that made it that way.  I had always heard that you can't fully appreciate hockey until you see a game in person, when you experience how fast the game really is, and how much hitting and action there is all over the ice.

Weeellll...not really. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s a great game.  Fast paced, highly skilled athletes and a lot of strategy.  In fact, and don’t shoot me for the comparison, with the exception of a few rule differences, it’s very similar to soccer.  The goal is the same along with the movement on the field/ice, strategy etc.  Again, great game and fun to watch.  My only drawback was that it appeared to me that hockey has gone the way of the NFL.  I don’t follow the sport as far as rule changes and trends, but I got the distinct impression that the game has moved in the direction of less contact, more “safety”.  Very little checking on the boards, in fact, not a lot of hitting overall.  Granted, it’s very fast, physical game, but I was expecting more.

Still, a great experience, and great trip.

Let’s back up to the “dance team” for hockey. How does that work on ice?

One of the reasons Mobile is demolishing and rebuilding its downtown civic center is to host a hockey team (allegedly).

The family of my girlfriend in high school was from Michigan, her dad was a hockey referee before they moved to Alabama. To appease him I tried to watch it but the game just never made sense to me and I couldn't (still can't) follow the puck. I've been to a few live hockey games since and the same problem persists. I'm never sure what's going on. I should have stuck with her, though, she's an executive with an NBA team now.

Maybe minor league hockey works in Mobile. They've tried it before and it didn't (see Mobile Mystics, 1995-2002).  Minor league baseball did, until it didn't (see Mobile Bay Bears, 1997- 2019).  There's a really nice abandoned park where they used to play out by Costco. I think Mobile really wants to be Pensacola or maybe Pensacola just supplanted Mobile?  Pensacola has the Blue Wahoos baseball team (est. 2012) and the Ice Flyers hockey team (est. 2009) which both seem to be surviving, and maybe thriving.

I'd like to see Mobile get a minor league baseball team again. Bring life back to that stadium. I don't want another Diamondbacks or Padres affiliate. Give us Red Sox, Braves, Cubs, Cards, or something relatable. Shame to see that stadium just rot after the Bay Bears became Trash Pandas.

Huge diversion. Apologies.

As far as getting the game of hockey....I got it.  I understand the rules and the strategies etc.  I was only a little disappointed in the lack of "violence".  Not as far as fights go, but more in the actual checking and overall hitting around the ice. It looked like a game that had been somewhat neutered from that aspect of it, much like the NFL.  Maybe it was just the way that game played out.
