Never really hated Ray Perkins. As a Bama coach, he was pretty tolerable. But now he's dead.
Short version of long story. I played rec league softball for years. Keen, right? One year we had a ton of Bama players on my team. Vince Sutton, some of the Goode's and others I'd have to look up. Vince? His arm was unreal. Threw a ball from the outfield fence that I couldn't see, could only hear it coming in when I was covering the plate. Just unbelievable.
Played in a tournament at Sokol Park (if you ever lived in Tuscaloosa, you know where that is) and made it to the championship game. Looked up and saw Ray standing behind the fence at home plate. Seconds later, we didn't have a roster. All the Bama players vanished.
It's kind of strange. I didn't hate Bama as much then as I have in recent years. Oh, I hated them, but during Perkins' time we were essentially on equal footing. Dye was a better coach, we were on par in recruiting and facilities, and the games were competitive every year. It was actually fun.

I keep hearing from friends, friends of friends and reading internet comments about how Bama (and others) have ruined football, the iron bowl isn’t fun anymore because of Bama, etc etc.
You fuckers must have forgotten about fear the thumb and the years that led up to that shit. Seemed to be having a damn good time with the rivalry when y’all had t shirts every year about the streak and Tuberville was rubbing Bama’s nose in it.
Auburn owns the longest winning streak in the series since the 70s.
It was fun for Auburn then and it’s fun for Bama now. Quit hiring shit coaches and blaming Bama for the misfortunes.

Ray Perkins is dead. You must have missed that part.

I went to his foosball camp as an 148 pound sophomore. I was not heavily recruited at the time but went to showcase my talents and figure out where I wanted to take them.
Bo Peep was the fastest guy in camp. Can’t recall his name. From Phenix city and ended up going to AU. I stayed right with him in the stairwell on the way down to practice that morning.
I remember Cornelius Bennet being at the final dinner where he ate 2 of the big steaks. He was already a legend and just there for the grub.
of course Ray wasn’t involved much if any. Just had your picture made with him.
Coaches Dubose, goose and wingo ran things.
I’d imagine Perkins told people through the years about me being at his camp.
He was the man that replaced the man. That ain’t easy.

The coaches don't normally work with the chain operators at these camps.

I have no Perkins stories. Why would I?
I did used to work with the guy who was Bo Jackson's agent, along with Cornelius Bennett and others. He told me that Ray Perkins was a "player's coach", basically meaning they loved him and if anything happened in their lives good or bad, he was there for them, and he'd be the first person they'd call as well. Surprisingly, he said the polar opposite was Bill Curry. Stuck up, cocky sumbitch.

That anywhere near the Gorky Park the Scorpions sang about in that Berlin Wall song?

Bo Peep eh? Hanging out with them Phenix City boys I see.
He and Ed King were something serious though. Crazy too they were on the same offense in HS.
And his name is James Joseph.

I finally remembered. James Joseph. What’s going on with peep nowadays?
I remember after he won the fastest man race them asking him to say something and he grabbed his enormous black penis and muttered something unintelligible. I can remember thinking to myself , “that’s the biggest dick I’ve ever seen in my lifeâ€. Even though he didn’t take it out of his shorts.
And believe me, even at 14, I had seen a LOT of cock.

I think he's still prowling East Alabama. I went to school with his younger brother who now works in the PC Wal Mart Quick Lube center .....no seriously, he's prob the fastest oil changer in the joint. I hate when I get the other guy. I don't have all damn day. Anyway, yeah, James was a stud for sure. ed King is still around too, selling insurance last I saw for All State in Phenix City. For his time, he was one of the biggest OL you'd ever seen. Quick feet too, not sure on cock size though. I can find out for you.

James Joseph and his Red Devils came down to Dothan to play the Tigers in a first round playoff game. Seemed like they drew PC every year in the first round. Usually makes for a quick exit. Anyway, Joseph, who had already committed to AU, busted up his knee early on. The PC coach was a friend of my father in law and told him Joseph saw the good Dr. James Andrews that night. Flew him up there from Dothan. That's called protecting your "investment."

Wayne Trawick. Legend.
has to be close to 90 now. See him at the Waffle House every now and then.

He's no Stacy Danley.
Scored some floor tickets a couple of years ago at a basketball game right before Xmas. Some Pansy team. Easy win. Anyway - guy sitting beside me looked just like Danley. I blew it off. After a half of sitting there I finally asked him his name because as I said “just curious because you look similar to a guy I used to watch play football here†he replies back “well maybe I knew him then, what’s his name? By the way im Stacey danley†and shook my hand. Got damned the dude had the biggest damn meat hooks. My hand still hurts. You can’t teach that kind of physical attribute. He ended up talking to me for 20 mins about how he was in some legal battle with Alabama state over getting fired. I had no idea.

I forget how they knew each other. Probably went to college together. My FIL is 83 so Trawick is at least that.

In just pure math 83 is close to 90. But at that age that kind of gap is a gift. And an eternity.
Edit: was told my someone who would know that ole Wayne is 82. Well shit. I just called him old. I’m gonna have to buy him some grits now at the Waffle House but I will recommend he put down the beam and Marlboro’s at his age. I do believe they are making him look old.
-
I was recruited by Perkins. I chose AU. Not a fan of the man. May he RIP.

I don't know if you're being serious, but the two things are not comparable in any way whatsoever.
In terms of competition, Auburn has been as (or possibly more) competitive with Alabama during Saban's run than any other team in the nation. Saban's lost five games to Auburn since landing at the Crapstone. The last four years have been back and forth swaps. I might be wrong and I'm not looking it up, but my memory is that LSU is the only other SEC team with more than two wins against Saban. And only Ole Miss has two. Every other team in the league is either 0 or 1.
The ruination of football has nothing to do with the Iron Bowl, honestly. It's the mind-numbing monotony of a few teams bludgeoning the majority of the schedule. I'm sick of Clemson starting every year at 1 or 2 and then mauling the ACC (which freaking sucks). I'm sick of seeing your Tahd perched in the top five no matter what and then abusing shit teams like Kentucky, Vandy, Arkansas, etc.
And don't tell me "those teams should do better" because that's not the reality any more. There are a lot of reasons for that (parking lots full of chargers and hummers, performance enhancers, "business decisions" among them, but not limited to just those).
It's not fun because on most weekends it isn't competitive.
-
Recruited to do what?
To drive the cars from the used lot to the recruits houses, duh.

Ray demanded more of that than Pat....totes understandable. I'm with CCT there.

THAT ^^^ all of it.
During the Thumb streak, those games were fun, competitive. Even our 2004 and 2010 seasons, we weren't just blowing through a cupcake schedule of lessers 55-14 every game. Those games were fun. Especially the IB and LSU games. 2004 LSU was one of the bestt games of all time to me. 2010 LSU was Cam's coming out party. Even the Ole Miss game we lost when Aromashadu dropped the winning TD in the end zone.....great game the loss aside. I miss those games. K is right.....it has very little to do with the IB, and everything to do with 3-4 NFL style teams running through everyone like a buzzsaw EVERY. DAMN. YEAR.

What's better for sports in general, having parity where everybody has at least a reasonable shot, or are "dynasties" more beneficial overall? Is Major League Baseball better when the Yankees or Dodgers can simply outbid everyone for the best players and win 100+ games every year, or are salary caps the way to go where the Braves and Cheatin' Cards can make it to the show?
Years ago, College football limited the number of scholarships to 85 in part, to achieve some parity and not allow the Bama's and Notre Dames and USC's of the world to run 130 players out on the field and steamroll everybody 56-7. The old saying, which was true, was that Bear Bryant used to sign guys he didn't need just so his rivals couldn't sign them. But even with that supposed parity, you still have the same teams year after year who are signing top 5 recruiting classes and the same handful of programs making the playoffs.
So how is it that the same teams continue to prosper each and every year when there's only a limited number of scholarships to go around? You could argue that teams like Bama and Ohio State have tradition and kids want to play for the highest profile programs. Maybe that plays into it a little, but quite honestly, these kids don't give a fickity fuck about that. You could say that certain programs are sending more players to the NFL, and that's the ultimate goal. I can buy some of that; however, there's a huge difference in a program developing players to become NFL ready, and one that's simply signing 25 of the best high school players in the country every year, many of which are going to the show regardless of where they play college ball.
So, let's target the juggernaut right here in our back yard. We complain that Gus doesn't "develop" players, but is Nick Saban really doing that? How much development do you have to do with a 6'2" 235 pound running back who is pretty much NFL ready before he sets foot on your campus? Do you have to develop Henry Ruggs, Jaylen Waddle, Devonte Smith, Amari Cooper, Julio Jones etc. to become great wide receivers? How hard is it to make the playoffs when you can literally put a 5* player at every position across your O-line each and every year?
I’m not saying that it’s not attractive to the top players to go to a program winning championships and putting players in the NFL. But the program has to get to that point first. Once Nick Saban set foot on campus, Alabama went from Brodie getting sacked 17 times in one game, to the #1 recruiting class every single year. In fact, I think they’ve only missed the #1 spot once in Saban’s tenure. There was nothing attractive about that program. They were coming off years of ineptitude. But suddenly, it was THE destination for the best high school players in America? And they’ve never looked back. Something had to happen. There had to be something that changed procedurally. Was it Nick Saban’s bubbly personality? Yeah, right.
I know why, and it’s the one reason that while college football is my #1 sports passion, I will forever be cynical as long as Saban is at the helm.

Exactly my point. But to take it a step further, there's no Sheriff in town. Zero threat of any accountability, and this comes directly from one of their long time staff members. The answer to my original question above is the NCAA wants/needs dynasties. They're making sure that happens.
