The good guys get off to a winning start with an overtime win against St. Joe’s. Youngest team ever put on the floor at Auburn, but there are some damn fine looking athletes out there. Troy up next for the Fighting Pearls. Troy is 4-3 and really haven't beaten anyone with W's over Samford, Central Baptist, Western Carolina and North Alabama. The 3 losses were not close, all in excess of 20 point blow outs to UAB, UNCW and Texas Tech. No shame in a bad loss to TT, plus Troy took that game on Rona-short notice and made the trek out to Lubbock.
The Trojans are led by lanky 6'9" Zay Williams, who averages 13.3 ppg and 8.4 rebounds.
Outside of Justin Powell, we really haven't shot the ball well so far. Hopefully, they can start getting in a rhythm Saturday.

Dang! Just watched the game DVR'ed. Offense has been great but defense last two games is smothering. Get Shariff in the flow and it will get ugly for opposing teams. Powell had a pedestrian night but you can see Pearl is expecting Shariff to be back. Flanigan is exerting his will. Ark may get us but I'm not so sure. If you're hitting them, great, you can run with anybody. If not, UCF beats your ass.

I will say this, if Thor gains weight and strength, he could end up being one of our best ever players. The guy can move with the ball really well. He just doesn’t have the size to finish yet.

I read a piece on him before the season and he said he's always patterned his game after Kevin Durant. I followed enough NBA pre-BLM, to know KD is 6'11" to 7 footer who is slightly built and has a game that takes people away from the basket. He can drain 3's all day or pop 12-15 footers over you. That was what Thor said he works on constantly. I saw him with a couple of nice moves like that last night.

They fought like hell. These kids are well coached. Very Young though. D lost it today. 90 at home should win you every game. And better than anything? Bruce’s presser. It bothered him. He’s mad. Cooper got fucking hammered on that drive. GH or GF sent a pic of the play. How you miss something so blatantly bad is beyond me. Cooper should have been at the line for 2 shots to win with 2 seconds left. I like my chances there.

I realize I am a homer, but that wasn't the only time the refs missed a call on that end of the court in the 2nd half last night. Thankfully though, they made up for swallowing those whistles on that end by testing them loud and proud a lot on the other end...

Its just the inconsistency that gets to me. Call ticky tacky crap ALL NIGHT (which helped Ark get back in it some), and then the last 2 mins you don't even call the most blatant hockey style cross checking? GTFO with that.
But there is plenty to blame on ourselves as well. Flannigan and Jaylin looked uninterested almost the entire second half. You can also argue that with 18-20 seconds left with Rife at the top of the key, Bruce should have sent him to the basket a little sooner.

Cooper has everyone's attention now that we've seen him play a few times.
No way a veteran 12th ranked Mizzou team should have been an underdog last night to the most youthful team in the SEC.
It's obviously due the sensational play of our point guard.
Can't wait to get Powell back so he and Thor can spot up for some threes and give the opposition something else to defend.
Our defense was very good especially in the later stages with a number of blocks inside and limited fouling considering we almost always give up muscle in the paint. Really good win.

Indeed...the little guy is a bitch to defend with two which is why I mentioned an extra jump shooter like Powell in the mix to shake things up.
Was in a discussion with my son about NBA aspirations and comparing Harper (unfair at this stage) who probably had a better long ball.
I do think Cooper has better passing skills (visionwise) and forces you to foul him more by relentlessly taking it inside whereas Jared would sometimes camp outside for short periods.

So fun to watch.
Some of our guys are smart and quick enough to work themselves open just in time for a pass on the blocks. He's not yapping at opponents or giving hand signals he's just allowing you to follow his lead.

The D overall is not that good. I heard an interview with Pearl just before the season and he said the one area that he sees as a weakness is defensive quickness. And it shows a lot with guys getting wide open for 3's and beating their man off the dribble. But where they make up for it is their length and ability to block shots. Last night was a great example where numerous times, our guys were beaten off the dribble, but when a Mizzou player got near the rack, that shit got sent back.
Saturday is going to be interesting. I've seen Baylor play twice this year and that's some full grown men. Really, really good defensively, only giving up 62 points a game while averaging in the 80's themselves. It will be a monumental task but it will be good to see how this club has progressed with Cooper since Gonzaga owned that ass.

Powell's a shooter so Cooper handling the ball shouldn't pose a problem for him spotting up anymore than it does Thor.
But yeah he might qualify for a medical hardship as it stands. You guys know about that more than I do some of you being doctors and what not.

So looking ahead for 2021 we still look like a contender with signees 6'3" point guard Trey Alexander and 6'10"Jabari Smith given our current most veteran upperclassmen are (3) juniors.
Just looking at videos both create their own shots from the tough 10 to 12 feet range around the paint, something our recent guards and swingmen haven't really done much except on breaks and put-back dunks.
This works well with Moore, Thor or any combination of forwards on the floor and if Powell is still with the team...even better.

I like what Fran Fru-shiller was saying during the broadcast when he said If....IF Cooper returns, then Auburn will be one of the best teams in the country. Now granted, he was pretty sure Coop is a one-and-done, but if he doesn't grade out first round, there's a chance he'll be back.
I was talking with some guys Friday about him and we agreed that he's really, really good, but he just doesn't need to be quite this good right now. I never thought Auburn would be hit so hard with the early departure bug. I know Chuma Okeke was here for 2 years but came out as soon as it became obvious dat boy gooood. Okoro jetted after one, and most likely Cooper will be gone too.

if were being honest....I like the guy and he's dynamic....he has great vision and can dish it out as good as I've seen, but he's a subpar shooter at the moment. He has no jump shot, he has no 3 point shot, no mid range shot, no fade away - he gets a lot off floaters and layups. And at the stripe drawing tons of contact. He is still a project at this level. But NBA teams don't usually choose guys in the 1st round that need to develop a jump shot. Just sayin....And that's just the offensive lackings.
As you mentioned above, there is the D SIDE which is his real liability.
The guy is def a spark for the team, and he changes the way other teams have to run plays but his game has a ton of gaps.
