Looking back, I now wish Derrick, Marlon, Prince etc. had sat out so that I'd have an excuse to fall back on. But they did play and a pack of Gophers ran for 215 yards, over around and right through them, while the offense looked slow, confused and anemic.
It's a meaningless bowl game, I get it. But since all those guys did play, you got the sense that they were taking it seriously. The fact of the matter is that save for a kick off return for a TD, this was pretty much a blow out. At no time during that game were we even remotely competitive.
I'm okay with losing said meaningless bowl game. I'm pretty much okay with a defense that just didn't show up and got pushed around. What I can't stomach is watching the same clueless garbage from Gus and his laminated sheet of genius. Yeah, I said I was going to lay off him. So sue me.
Does anyone recall an early series where they threw 3 straight short passes to Schwartz? If so, anyone recall the 2 straight runs into the middle of the line right afterward? Look, even my feeble mind could see Minnesota playing one of the softest zones I've ever seen and the fact that they never went away from it the entire game. They dared Gus to go down the field 7 yards at a time. They gift wrapped it and gave that opportunity to him. Part of me thinks that Fleck knows that Gus is either too stubborn or too stupid to realize and take advantage of what they were giving him. Either way, he continued to have Boobies tip toe and dance his way into the teeth of the defense.
Also in the department of does anyone recall....anyone recall when Devan Barrett played running back? Anyone recall that he came in for one play a game and every single time, they threw him the same swing pass to the left. Guess who our designated swing pass man is now. Harold Joiner. We saw him run on the field and everyone in the room went, "Oh shit, swing pass to the left." At the same time, everyone on the Gopher defense went, "Oh cool, swing pass to the left."

Outside of Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson, Auburn's defense was not elite. KJ Britt hits like a truck but he plays as out of position as one trying to turn tight corners, too.
The offensive line was a questionable group going into the year and proved to be THE issue with the offense all year. No push, unable to establish consistent run game, all of that put too much pressure on a freshman QB who we know is not running the most complicated nor modern passing scheme in football.
Getting nine (9) wins including beating Alabama (yes, that matters) with those factors in play is remarkable. A lesser coach would not have done it. Face it, that's what would be here if Auburn fired Gus. We will not get a better one at this stage. Ride this out and see where it goes is the smart play.

Gus squanders goodwill like he squanders talent. He got taken to school by a COACH who guided a team full of two and three-star recruits.
Go look. Here's Minnesota's history:
2016: 46th in recruiting. 0 five stars, 1 four star. Mississippi State was 28th.
2017: 59th in recruiting. 0 five stars, 0 four stars.
2018: 38th in recruiting, behind every SEC team not named Vanderbilt. 0 5 stars, 3 4 stars (AU had 15 four star recruits and was a disappointment).
2019: 45th in recruiting. 0 four stars. 0 five stars. Kentucky was 34th. Arkansas 23rd.
Currently: Projected to be 33rd. 0 five stars, 2 four stars.
The LOWEST Auburn finished in recruiting in any of those years was 12th. The total haul of four and five stars for Minnesota over the last five years doesn't even reach any single year of any of the five for Auburn. Every single year, AU signed more four/five stars than Minnesota has in total over the last five years. Think on that.
Yes, Gus coaches his ass off against Alabama. And I agree, that matters. But if we're ever going to be what we want to be, it cannot be ALL that matters. It has to be one piece of the puzzle. Beating UGA matters. Beating LSU matters. Beating UF matters. Beating UT matters. Never falling behind A&M, MSU, UM matters.
So Gus coaches his ass off against Bama. But he coaches like ASS much of the rest of the time. A lesser coach? PJ Fleck would take the talent Auburn has and dominate the SEC. Dom.IN.ate. Given the talent disparity, I think Brian, Snags and I could win eight games a year. A donkey with a testicular hernia could have coached AU to wins over Arkansas, Ole Miss, MSU, Tulane, Kent and Samford. The only other teams we beat were Oregon, A&M and Alabama. Of those? I think the donkey (as long as Steele was there) would have gotten outs against Oregon and A&M.
Don't tell me that if AU hired a moderately competent coach that we'd be any worse off. A offense with half a pulse would have beaten LSU and UGA. Instead? He dragged a dead dog out on the field and left it to stink and rot. Fuck that.
The man has squandered more talent and more goodwill than any coach I can ever remember. Beat Alabama and Georgia!!! We're rolling! Shit the bed in the SEC-CG and fuckall in the bowl. Win and look like your head is out of your ass finally!! Lose inexplicably and look like dingo dong doing it.
He's not a good coach. He's just NOT. At this point I'd be okay with a clean sweep. I want it all gone. Kodi (bless him), Carnell (love you, man), the whole damn lot. I'd rather SUCK for a year or two knowing that we were rebuilding it than continue this slow boil of perpetual mediocrity.

As was said above, the lowest we've finished in recruiting during his tenure is 12th. And with what amounts to top 10 talent, he's managed right at 5 losses a year. When does that become unacceptable? When does the Auburn fambly realize that this is the norm, as good as it's going to get? Are we okay with this? If you are, then we have nothing to discuss.
A record like that at Kentucky or Vandy or MSU or Ole Miss will get you a lifetime contract and a bronze statue outside the stadium. Apparently that's the case at AU as well because it's damn sure gotten Gus a long contract and $7 large a year.
I've heard the arguments. Well, he recruits lights out. Yep! I would submit that any coach worth a damn could do the same. The place sells itself and you hear it from almost every single recruit. "Auburn just feels like family". Dye recruited lights out. Bowden was until he decided to form a team of midgets. Tuberville knocked it out of the park til he quit trying. Even 5-19 Mean Gene brought in the talent.
But, he runs a clean program. He's doing it the right way. Bullshit! We're playing the game just like everybody else is. It's just that some...cough cough...Bama....cough...are doing it on a level very few would dare try and match.
Well, who would we get that's better? Did you watch the game yesterday? Did you see that group of 3 star players manhandle that ass? Give me 5 minutes and I'll give you a list of 25 I'd take over Gus right now. The one point I'll concede is that I would never trust our administration to even come close to making the right call, so I guess all the above argument is pretty much moot at this point.
I don't expect a Bama dynasty or a Clemson level turnaround. I do expect this program to be battling for the SEC West year in and year out. I do expect to go .500 with the LSU's, FUGA's and Bama's of the world. I do expect to come out of games like yesterday not going, "Same old, tired bullshit we've been watching year after year."

Nope, Tubs became that later when he quit trying and only signed those that "camped well". Before that, he was inking Jason Campbell, Ronnie Brown, Caddy, Obewondabomino, Aromatherapydo, Anthony Mix, Carlos Rogers, Brandon Cox, Kenny Irons, Kodi Burns, Lee Ziemba, Pat Sims, Sen'Derrick Marks and on and on and on.... These were not nobody's he coached up. Most were very high profile kids coming out of high school.
Bowden started well but had already made the decision to change the entire direction of the program. He said before he coached his first game that he wanted to run Diddy's offense. In doing so, he changed the entire focus of recruiting in general. He wanted the next Warrick Dunn in the backfield, hence the collection of mighty mites. He turned away from our traditional recruiting grounds in Georgia and started trying to tap heavily into Florida.
Agreed that he sucked. But that was his own doing in trying to change the whole football culture at AU.

But it's fleeting when they win their bowl game, explain that "iff'n Tooer warn't hurt we'da whupped ya'll'ses ass by bout three terchdowns" and bounce back above us in the polls. What was really accomplished? Who's going to remember. I don't want to beat them, I want to fucking bury them.
What do we have to show for having one of the best defenses in the SEC over the last three years. What's in the trophy case since we had one QB who is now the backup to Tom Brady and another who was freshman of the year in the league? Do we have any SEC titles? Did we make the playoffs? Did we beat LSU or Georgia more than we lost?
Fuck no.
We've dicked around with this shitty offense that looks EERILY like the Turtle Trottersley fucktardation more often than not. We've let comfortable leads evaporate by puckering up the anus in ungodly fashion (at LSU, Georgia at home 2013 for examples). We've steadfastly refused to improve the coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball -- particularly receivers and quarterbacks -- while giving handouts to sycophants and old buddies. We've had our own former players state bluntly that they were not coached well when they are auditioning for NFL positions (Cam, every receiver that ever played under Gus). We've continued to do the same stupid thing in games when what we're doing is CLEARLY not working.
I tried to get encouraged after the Alabama game. But now I'm right back where I was two weeks before.
Maybe I'll regret this, but I'd rather lose fighting than continue to wallow in the same pointless rut.

On another note, I watched some of the first half....meh...and all of the 2nd half of the UT/Indiana game last night. Turned out to be a great watch. 6-3 Vols at half and Indiana ran out on them and were up 2 scores late in the game. Jarrod Guantonamo-guaranteedo looked like road kill most of the game and was even pulled for a bit. UT put together a drive for 6, pulled off a beautiful on-sides kick and went down for the winning score.
Entertaining game, but the title of this thread is what made me think about it. Of course, the cameras panned the crowd after every play. Damn, Tennessee. What a disgusting collection of humanity. Not a "female" under 215 and every guy had a nasty Chris Stapleton beard and wore those orange overalls. At one particularly low point for UT, they focused on one fan who was obviously less than pleased with his team's performance. He was waiving his arms and throwing punches in the air and basically frothing at the mouth, while all the fans around him just stared as if an alien life form had just appeared amongst them.
It was a good look.
